{"id":1002789,"date":"2018-10-30T15:46:28","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T19:46:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/democrats.org\/?p=1002789"},"modified":"2024-05-23T20:15:05","modified_gmt":"2024-05-23T20:15:05","slug":"dnc-on-trumps-unconstitutional-attack-on-immigrants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/democrats.org\/news\/dnc-on-trumps-unconstitutional-attack-on-immigrants\/","title":{"rendered":"DNC on Trump\u2019s Unconstitutional Attack on Immigrants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">In response to Trump\u2019s threat to end birthright citizenship, DNC Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Media Director John Santos released the following statement:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cTrump\u2019s proposal to end birthright citizenship is clearly unconstitutional and is his most recent attempt to incite fear and division ahead of the midterm election.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cCitizenship by birth has been the law of the land since 1898, when California-born, Chinese-American <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/history\/2018\/10\/30\/birthright-citizenship-trump-inspired-history-lesson-th-amendment\/?utm_term=.26ee835e7549\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wong Kim Ark <\/a>successfully petitioned the Supreme Court to recognize his citizenship. Denying children their birthright citizenship would have a devastating impact on the AAPI community by making it harder for immigrant families to integrate and pursue the American Dream.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThis proposal is just one of many anti-immigrant ideas that have been introduced by Trump in order to distract voters from his administration\u2019s failed policies.
