In the wake of mass shootings, Trump advocated for strengthening background checks. But now, it\u2019s clear these were just empty words. Trump had the opportunity to put his money where his mouth is, and instead said he would veto bipartisan legislation.<\/p>\n

THEN: Trump repeatedly said that he would support legislation to strengthen background checks for gun purchases.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201cWhether we are Republican or Democrat, we must now focus on strengthening Background Checks!\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201cVery strong improvement and strengthening of background checks will be fully backed by White House.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201cI will be strongly pushing Comprehensive Background Checks with an emphasis on Mental Health.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

THEN: Trump said the only reason lawmakers wouldn\u2019t support strengthening background checks is because they\u2019re afraid of the NRA.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201cThe background checks are so important. People are afraid to do background checks because you\u2019re afraid of somebody. And you know what?\u00a0 You\u2019re going to be more popular if you do \u2014 if you have a strong, good \u2014 but I don\u2019t care who\u2019s endorsing you or not endorsing you, you\u2019re going to be more popular if that\u2019s what you\u2019re into.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201cYou guys \u2014 half of you are so afraid of the NRA. There\u2019s nothing to be afraid of. And you know what? If they\u2019re not with you, we have to fight them every once and a while\u2026 But sometimes we\u2019re going to have to be very tough and we\u2019re going to have to fight them. But we need strong background checks.\u201d<\/p>\n

NOW: Trump has threatened to veto bipartisan legislation to expand background checks for gun purchases.<\/p>\n
