Today\u2019s Trump downgrade of the United States\u2019 credit rating by Fitch is a direct result of Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans\u2019 extreme and reckless agenda. After the deficit increased every year under the Trump administration, Republicans \u2013 from those running for the highest office in the land to serving in the halls of Congress \u2013 have repeatedly and openly pushed the United States toward a default on its loans that would have sent our economy into chaos. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donald Trump urged Republicans in Congress to allow the United States to default earlier this year if they didn\u2019t get the draconian cuts they demanded. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNBC<\/a>: \u201cFormer President Donald Trump on Wednesday urged Republican lawmakers to let the United States default on its debt if Democrats don\u2019t agree to spending cuts. \u2018I say to the Republicans out there \u2014 congressmen, senators \u2014 if they don\u2019t give you massive cuts, you\u2019re going to have to do a default,\u2019 said Trump, who is again running for president.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Trump\u2019s congressional Republicans were willing to let the U.S. default too \u2014 prioritizing petty political games over the disastrous impact defaulting would have on their constituents. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hill<\/a>: \u201c[Rep. Marjorie Taylor<\/strong>] Greene<\/strong> says \u2018no one is concerned\u2019 about debt default in Republican conference\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hill<\/a>: \u201cRep. Matt Gaetz<\/strong> (R-Fla.) said Tuesday that he and his conservative colleagues \u2018don\u2019t feel like we should negotiate with our hostage\u2019 on a debt-limit compromise.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Axios<\/a>: \u201cRep. Byron Donalds<\/strong> (R-Fla.) leapt to Trump\u2019s defense, telling Axios that \u2018if we enter a default situation, it might actually help us clarify some of our spending problems because a future default, if we don\u2019t get our spending in order, is going to be much worse.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN<\/a>: Rep. Ken Buck<\/strong> said of default, \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s the end of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Axios<\/a>: \u201cFormer President Trump’s call for Republicans to let the U.S. default before agreeing to a compromise on government spending cuts has divided the right-wing House Freedom Caucus. \u2026 \u2018I agree with [Trump],\u2019 Rep. Kevin Hern<\/strong> (R-Okla.), the chair of the conservative Republican Study Committee, told Axios.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NBC News<\/a>: \u201cRep. Ralph Norman<\/strong>, R-S.C., an ultraconservative lawmaker who pushed for a debt limit standoff, said the solution is for Senate Democrats and Biden to \u2018accept what we sent them\u2019 and pass the House GOP bill as is. When he was told Democrats won\u2019t pass the bill, Norman replied: \u2018OK, then let\u2019s face the consequences. That\u2019s fine.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tim Scott opposed President Biden\u2019s bipartisan deal that saved the United States from defaulting on its debt. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cWhen Sen Tim Scott (R-S.C.) was asked Wednesday if he supports the legislation, unveiled over the weekend, that McCarthy negotiated with President Biden, he replied, \u2018The short answer is no.\u2019 Scott, speaking at an event hosted by Axios, sought to avoid directly criticizing McCarthy, saying he \u2018did a good job of figuring out how to negotiate with someone who did not want to negotiate.\u2019 But Scott made clear he wasn\u2019t happy with the outcome. \u2018Is it in our best interest as a nation to allow Joe Biden, someone who we cannot trust on spending, to have an open checkbook, no limit on the credit card, until the end of his term?\u2019 Scott asked. \u2018My answer is no.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ron DeSantis said he would not support the bipartisan deal that averted a default. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ron DeSantis<\/a>: \u201cThis debt deal is not going to change the trajectory of our country\u2026 So I think it\u2019s a bad deal. I would not support the deal.\u201d\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nikki Haley railed against the bipartisan debt ceiling deal. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CT Mirror<\/a>: \u201c\u2018It would be easy for me to say Biden did that to us. But our Republicans did that to us,\u2019 Haley said. \u2018When you see this debt discussion that\u2019s happening now, know that it\u2019s a national bipartisan disgrace.\u2019\u201d

Vivek Ramaswamy said he would have voted against the debt ceiling deal \u2014 with no regard for sending the U.S. toward a default. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hill<\/a>: \u201cThe biotech entrepreneur also rallied against the deal in a statement on Tuesday, taking issue with the proposed reduction from the IRS budget. \u2018I would absolutely vote against the debt ceiling deal. Reducing the IRS budget from $80 billion to $78 billion doesn\u2019t solve the essential problem of a corrupt administrative state \u2013 at the IRS or elsewhere,\u2019 Ramaswamy said in a statement. \u2018We need to think on the timescales of history, not 2-year election cycles. We should stand for principles, not incrementalism or window-dressing.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mike Pence announced he opposed the deal reached to raise the debt ceiling and avoid defaulting on our debt.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hill<\/a>: \u201cFormer Vice President Mike Pence, who is expected to launch a presidential campaign in the coming weeks, voiced his disapproval Tuesday of a budget deal struck by the White House and House GOP leadership to raise the debt limit and avert a default. \u2018Congress\u2019 debt limit deal doesn\u2019t just kick the can down the road, it uses Washington smoke and mirror games to make small reforms while weakening our military at a time of increasing threats from foreign adversaries,\u2019 Pence said in a statement through his political advocacy group.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
