We\u2019re here to help: MAGA Republicans\u2019 new speaker-designate supports extreme nationwide abortion bans. He led the charge for Donald Trump denying President Biden\u2019s legitimate election win and tried to overthrow the votes of 81 million Americans. He\u2019s a leading proponent of slashing Social Security and Medicare. Mike Johnson is a carbon-copy of the MAGA extremism that is deeply unpopular with Americans across the country. House Republicans will have to answer for their support for their new MAGA speaker next November. Make no mistake: The American people will hold them accountable for this choice.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Johnson was the behind-the-scenes \u201carchitect\u201d of Trump\u2019s Big Lie \u2014 helping spread election conspiracy theories and leading the effort to overturn the 2020 election results.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/mike-johnson-house-speaker_n_65390b88e4b011a9cf7bf799?d_id=6561369&amp;ncid_tag=tweetlnkushpmg00000016&amp;utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_source=Twitter&amp;utm_campaign=us_politics\">Huffington Post<\/a>:<strong> <\/strong>\u201cIn a crucial test for the MAGA crowd, <strong>[Johnson] supported a legal strategy to throw out the 2020 election based on no evidence of widespread fraud<\/strong>. Johnson, a former lawyer, led an amicus brief signed by over 100 Republican members of Congress backing a flawed Texas lawsuit that asked the Supreme Court to overturn the 2020 election. He also played a key role in crafting the rationale that many of his GOP colleagues used in justifying their votes to throw out the 2020 election results \u2015 even just hours after the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/03\/us\/politics\/republican-election-objectors.html\">New York Times<\/a>: \u201cIn formal statements justifying their votes, about three-quarters relied on the arguments of a low-profile Louisiana congressman, Representative <strong>Mike Johnson, the most important architect of the Electoral College objections<\/strong>. On the eve of the Jan. 6 votes, he presented colleagues with what he called a \u2018third option.\u2019 He faulted the way some states had changed voting procedures during the pandemic, saying it was unconstitutional, without supporting the outlandish claims of Mr. Trump\u2019s most vocal supporters. His Republican critics called it a Trojan horse that allowed lawmakers to vote with the president while hiding behind a more defensible case.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven lawmakers who had been among the noisiest \u2018stop the steal\u2019 firebrands took refuge in Mr. Johnson\u2019s narrow and lawyerly claims, though his nuanced argument was lost on the mob storming the Capitol, and over time it was the vision of the rioters \u2014 that a Democratic conspiracy had defrauded America \u2014 that prevailed in many Republican circles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BidenHQ\/status\/1717169501190430963?s=20\">Ali Vitali, MSNBC<\/a>: \u201cWe know that Mike Johnson was one of those pushing to overturn the 2020 election results. One person described him to me as, \u2018Jim Jordan with a jacket and a smile\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/q-and-a\/why-representative-mike-johnson-thinks-that-the-election-isnt-over\">The New Yorker<\/a>: \u201cA strong ally of the President, Johnson e-mailed his Republican colleagues, asking them to join the amicus brief and telling them that President Trump was \u2018anxiously awaiting the final list.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/q-and-a\/why-representative-mike-johnson-thinks-that-the-election-isnt-over\">Johnson<\/a>: \u201cI posted on my social media that we were going to file a brief on<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>behalf of members of Congress about election security. I didn\u2019t go into Article II. I am not sure about the sequence of events, but someone showed the President my post, I guess, and he called me and said he was so glad we were doing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>this, affirming the importance of the case. So we talked about it briefly, and he said, \u2018Do you think a lot of Republicans in the House will join on?\u2019 And I said, \u2018I think a large number will, Mr. President.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepMikeJohnson\/status\/1325176210666770434?s=20\">@RepMikeJohnson<\/a>: \u201cI have just called President Trump to say this: \u2018\u2018\u2018Stay strong and keep fighting, sir! The nation is depending upon your resolve. We must exhaust every available legal remedy to restore Americans&#8217; trust in the fairness of our election system.\u2019\u201d\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shreveporttimes.com\/story\/opinion\/columnists\/2021\/01\/24\/scalise-kennedy-and-johnson-complicit-big-lie-but-not-cassidy\/6669745002\/\">Shreveport Times<\/a>: \u201cPoliticians like Louisiana\u2019s Steve Scalise, John Kennedy, and Mike Johnson helped him push this false narrative, even after over 60<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>courts said that there was no widespread fraud or irregularities In the November 3rd election. They became co-conspirators with the former President and thus they became complicit in the \u2018big lie,\u2019 which led to the assault on the<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Capital and on the American Democracy. In fact, Congressman Mike Johnson became one of the main instigators in this farce that ultimately led to what happened at the people\u2019s house on the fateful day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Johnson is an anti-abortion extremist who\u2019s repeatedly supported and co-sponsored national abortion ban legislation, celebrated the overturning of <\/strong><strong><em>Roe v. Wade<\/em><\/strong><strong>, and has spent his political career trying to rip away women\u2019s reproductive freedom and throw doctors in jail for providing care.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepMikeJohnson\/status\/1616896170348974080?s=20\">@RepMikeJohnson<\/a>: \u201cAnd now\u2026 FINALLY\u2026 because Roe v. Wade was overturned last summer and Louisiana is now a proudly pro-life state\u2014 we will get the number of abortions to ZERO!! EVERYONE deserves a birthday. Thanks be to God.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BidenHQ\/status\/1717177186086465983\">Johnson<\/a>: \u201c<em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> gave constitutional cover to the elective killing of unborn children in America. Period. You think about the implications of that on the economy. We&#8217;re all struggling here to cover the bases of Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid and all the rest. If we had all those able-bodied workers in the economy, we wouldn&#8217;t be going upside down and toppling over like this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Roe<\/em> was a terrible corruption of America\u2019s constitutional jurisprudence.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/8814\/cosponsors?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22H.R.8814%22%2C%22H.R.8814%22%5D%7D&amp;s=1&amp;r=1&amp;overview=closed#tabs\">List of Co-Sponsors, H.R.8814 &#8211; Protecting Pain-Capable Unborn Children from Late-Term Abortions Act<\/a>: \u201cRep.
