In response to Ron DeSantis doubling down on his promise to repeal the Affordable Care Act, DNC National Press Secretary Sarafina Chitika released the following statement:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRon DeSantis is the latest 2024 Republican to echo Donald Trump\u2019s call to rip away affordable health care and devastate millions of Americans \u2014 and if he takes power, he\u2019s threatened to do even more. DeSantis is hellbent on taking his failed \u2018Florida Blueprint\u2019 nationwide, even though it has contributed to some of the highest health care costs in America and left hundreds of thousands of hardworking Floridians without insurance. If Ron DeSantis, Donald Trump, and MAGA Republicans have their way, they\u2019d send premiums skyrocketing to line the pockets of greedy health care executives and their wealthy buddies. Voters have rejected their extreme, unpopular agenda before and they\u2019ll do it again next November.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

DeSantis is the latest 2024 Republican to renew their call to repeal the Affordable Care Act \u2014 and he\u2019s threatened to do even more.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Justin Dougherty, Fox Carolina<\/a>: \u201cThe conversation about the Affordable Care Act \u2014 repealing and replacing it \u2014 has come up once again. Republicans failed to repeal it or replace it in 2017. If Republicans get control of Washington, [with] you in the White House, what\u2019s your plan to repeal or replace the Affordable Care Act?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DeSantis: \u201cWell, look, that was a big failure. Obviously, under the Trump administration, that was a core promise \u2014 it didn’t happen. You know, what we’re gonna do is we have this massive health care bureaucracy: pharmaceutical, government, insurance, all this stuff. It’s a total mess. We’re gonna have a comprehensive plan to lower people’s costs, and yes Obamacare hasn’t done it, so we\u2019ll transcend Obamacare, but I think you got to do a lot more than just that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Take Ron DeSantis at his word: If he takes power, he\u2019d hit the ground running to repeal the Affordable Care Act. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

DeSantis<\/a>: \u201cWe must repeal ObamaCare\u2026 I have no desire to \u2018improve\u2019 or \u2018reform\u2019 ObamaCare. I intend to repeal it.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

DeSantis<\/a>: \u201cObamacare should never have been passed.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

DeSantis<\/a>: \u201cThe full and complete repeal of Obama Care is one of the most critical issues of our time.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tampa Bay Times<\/a>: \u201cWhen he was soliciting Republican votes in the GOP primary, the front page of DeSantis\u2019 site highlighted how he \u2018led efforts\u2019 to \u2018repeal ObamaCare.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

May 2013<\/a>: DeSantis voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

January 2016<\/a>: DeSantis voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act without a replacement plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May 2017<\/a>: DeSantis voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act and let states roll back requirements for coverage of essential health services and pave the way for higher premiums on those with preexisting conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

HuffPost<\/a>: \u201cAs a Republican serving in the U.S. House, [DeSantis] was part of a far-right caucus that voted against the first ACA repeal bill that leadership brought to the floor because, DeSantis and his allies said, it didn\u2019t undo enough of the law\u2019s protections for people with pre-existing conditions. GOP leaders eventually put forward a more aggressive repeal. DeSantis and his colleagues voted yes on that one, but it failed in the Senate.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

DeSantis has attacked the Affordable Care Act on the campaign trail, and he\u2019s already signed legislation that allowed health insurers to circumvent ACA requirements.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

DeSantis<\/a>: \u201cThe first thing I did was I declined the congressional pension and I declined the congressional health care benefits because they were imposing worse things with Obamacare on people. And then they weren\u2019t subjected to Obamacare as Congress. \u2026 And so I didn\u2019t accept those benefits because I just thought it was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

St. Augustine Record<\/a>: \u201c[DeSantis signed into law a measure that] would allow insurance companies to sell short-term health coverage \u2014 an approach backed by President Trump and leading Republicans in Congress as a workaround of the Affordable Care Act, which they oppose.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

DeSantis\u2019s refusal to expand Medicaid is preventing hundreds of thousands of Floridians from getting affordable health care \u2014 leaving them to pay sky-high costs or live without insurance.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

KFF<\/a>: \u201cIf Florida were to expand its Medicaid program, 789,800 uninsured nonelderly adults would become eligible for coverage, 33% of the state\u2019s uninsured nonelderly adult population.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NBC News<\/a>: \u201cMore than 400,000 Floridians have lost coverage since Covid-era protections ended in March, and more than half (55%) were unenrolled due to \u2018procedural reasons,\u2019 not because they were found ineligible, according to the health research nonprofit KFF.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HuffPost<\/a>: \u201cDeSantis could do something about this. He has refused. In fact, as of this moment, his administration is embarking on a plan that some analysts worry could make the problem worse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HuffPost<\/a>: \u201cBut [expanding Medicaid] has been a tough sell in Tallahassee, where Republicans have had nearly uninterrupted control of the Florida\u2019s lawmaking process since 1999. Trump doubled down on his yearslong crusade to repeal the Affordable Care Act, calling for his MAGA minions to \u201cnever give up\u201d in their efforts to \u201cterminate\u201d the landmark legislation. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Messenger<\/a>: \u201cFormer President Donald Trump said he is \u2018seriously looking at alternatives\u2019 to Obamacare in a new post on his social media platform Truth Social. He also called it a \u2018low point for the Republican Party\u2019 that lawmakers failed to \u2018terminate\u2019 the health insurance program established by the Affordable Care Act. According to the latest figures this year, more than 40 million Americans rely on the program for those who can’t afford private plans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201cThe cost of Obamacare is out of control, plus, it\u2019s not good Healthcare. I\u2019m seriously looking at alternatives. We had a couple of Republican Senators who campaigned for 6 years against it, and then raised their hands not to terminate it. It was a low point for the Republican Party, but we should never give up!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

No matter who wins the race for the MAGA base, up to 135 million people with preexisting conditions could be subjected to discrimination by health insurance companies. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Center for American Progress<\/a>: \u201cAccording to new estimates from the Center for American Progress, 135 million people under age 65, or about half of nonelderly people, have a preexisting condition<\/strong> that an insurer could use to discriminate against them if they ever sought coverage through the individual market in the absence of ACA protections.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
