That\u2019s part of a broader pattern<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By: Jill Colvin<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Donald Trump has centered his unlikely rise from reality television star to onetime \u2014 and potentially future \u2014 president on the idea that he\u2019s wiser than Washington\u2019s bumbling political class, once going so far as to label himself a \u201cvery stable genius.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>But when it comes to one of history\u2019s darkest moments, Trump is professing ignorance.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Facing criticism for repeatedly harnessing rhetoric once used by Adolf Hitler to argue that immigrants entering the U.S. illegally are \u201cpoisoning the blood of our country,\u201d Trump insisted he had no idea that one of the world\u2019s most reviled and infamous figures once used similar words. The Nazi dictator spoke of impure Jewish blood \u201cpoisoning\u201d Aryan German blood to dehumanize Jews and justify the systemic murder of millions during the Holocaust.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI never knew that Hitler said it,\u201d Trump told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt on Friday, volunteering once again that he never read Hitler\u2019s biographical manifesto, \u201cMein Kampf.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI know nothing about Hitler,\u201d he insisted. \u201cI have no idea what Hitler said other than (what) I\u2019ve seen on the news. And that\u2019s a very, entirely different thing than what I\u2019m saying.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Trump\u2019s assertion that he knows so little about one of the 20th century\u2019s most documented figures is notable for someone seeking the presidency, a role steeped in and shaped by history. But claiming ignorance, particularly when it comes to people who espouse racist or antisemitic rhetoric, is a tactic Trump has repeatedly deployed when aiming to distance himself from uncomfortable storylines.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>After he was endorsed by former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard David Duke during his winning 2016 campaign, Trump insisted he had no knowledge of the white supremacist who had run for office numerous times and is described by the Anti-Defamation League as \u201cperhaps America\u2019s most well-known racist and anti-Semite.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cJust so you understand, I don\u2019t know anything about David Duke, OK?\u201d he told CNN\u2019s Jake Tapper in February 2016. \u201cI don\u2019t know anything about what you\u2019re even talking about with white supremacy or white supremacists.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Asked if he would condemn the white supremacists supporting him, Trump said he would \u201chave to look at the group. I mean, I don\u2019t know what group you\u2019re talking about.\u201d He continued to repeat that assertion even after Tapper said he was referring to the KKK.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Trump has also pleaded ignorance in other cases. As he ran for reelection in 2020, Trump said he didn\u2019t know much about QAnon, the convoluted conspiracy that alleges Democrats are involved in a satanic pedophilia ring and casts Trump as the nation\u2019s savior \u2014 even as he retweeted accounts promoting the conspiracy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI know nothing about it,\u201d he said during an NBC town hall. Nonetheless, he refused to rule it out as false. \u201cI don\u2019t know that and neither do you,\u201d he said.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>It was the same when Trump was asked to condemn the Proud Boys militia group, which was key in organizing the assault on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.<\/strong> Enrique Tarrio and other members of the far-right extremist group have been found guilty of seditious conspiracy and other crimes for their part in the attack, which was part of a desperate bid to keep Trump in power after he lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI don\u2019t know who the Proud Boys are,\u201d Trump told reporters after instructing the group, during a presidential debate, to \u201cStand back and stand by.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI mean, you\u2019ll have to give me a definition \u2018cause I don\u2019t really know who they are,\u201d Trump said of the group, which was drawing headlines at the time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Trump\u2019s insistence that he has not read \u201cMein Kampf\u201d \u2014 an assertion he also made at an Iowa rally last week \u2014 evoked a different Hitler book he once allegedly had in his possession.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Journalist Marie Brenner reported in Vanity Fair magazine in 1990 that Trump\u2019s ex-wife, Ivana Trump, told her lawyer that, \u201cfrom time to time her husband reads a book of Hitler\u2019s collected speeches, \u2018My New Order,\u2019 which he keeps in a cabinet by his bed.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Trump told Brenner that, \u201cit was my friend Marty Davis from Paramount who gave me a copy of \u2018Mein Kampf,\u2019 and he\u2019s a Jew.\u201d Davis confirmed to Brenner that he had indeed given Trump \u201da book about Hitler,\u201d but it was \u201cMy New Order, \u201c a collection of Hitler\u2019s speeches. \u201cI thought he would find it interesting,\u201d Davis said, adding, \u201cI am his friend, but I\u2019m not Jewish.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cLater, Trump returned to this subject.,\u201d Brenner wrote. \u201c\u2018If I had these speeches, and I am not saying that I do, I would never read them,\u2019\u201d Brenner wrote.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In \u201cMein Kampf,\u201d Hitler wrote that, \u201cAll great cultures of the past perished only because the originally creative race died out from blood poisoning.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Trump told Hewitt his message was \u201cvery different\u201d and he had \u201czero\u201d racist intent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Still, he repeated \u201cpoisoning\u201d references eight times.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Among those references: \u201cThey are poisoning our country.
