Ahead of Speaker Johnson fundraising in New York during the House GOP\u2019s two-week vacation, <\/em>DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBetween kissing the ring at Mar-a-Lago and fundraising in New York, MAGA Mike Johnson has a packed schedule for his two-week vacation putting politics and Donald Trump\u2019s campaign ahead of delivering for the American people. In case he needs a reminder of how voters feel about the House GOP playing politics with border security and aid to our allies, he may want to revisit the results of last week\u2019s special election in the same state he\u2019s now desperately trying to fundraise in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of working for the American people, Speaker MAGA Mike Johnson is heading to New York for a fundraiser.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Binghamton.com<\/a>: \u201cThe leader of the Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives is coming to Binghamton this week in support of Congressman Marc Molinaro. \u2026 Johnson will participate in a fundraiser for the freshman Republican who is running for re-election in the 19th Congressional District.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this week, Johnson went to Mar-a-Lago to meet with Donald Trump \u2013 proving once again that the House GOP is just another arm of Donald Trump\u2019s campaign.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johnson<\/a>: \u201cJust had a great meeting with President @realDonaldTrump this Presidents\u2019 Day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

House Republicans are taking a two-week recess instead of taking action to improve border security at home or support our allies abroad.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hill<\/a>: \u201cHouse GOP leadership canceled votes for Friday, and the House will return to Washington on Feb. 28 after the President\u2019s Day recess.<\/strong> \u2026 Johnson on Friday issued a statement saying Putin was \u2018likely directly responsible\u2019 for Navalny\u2019s death, but he did not give any indication the incident had immediately changed his calculus on bringing Ukraine aid to the floor for a vote. \u2026 Now, the House GOP\u2019s inaction on Ukraine coincides with comments from Trump that he would not protect NATO allies from a Russian attack if they had not contributed enough money toward defense spending.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Punchbowl News<\/a>: \u201cThis is the most chaotic, inefficient and ineffective majority we\u2019ve seen in decades covering Congress. It started this way under former Speaker Kevin McCarthy and has gotten worse under Johnson. <\/strong>And things aren\u2019t going to get easier. The House is leaving town today by 2:30 p.m. for the 13-day Presidents Day recess. When members return on Feb. 28, there will be only three days to fund a huge swath of the federal government or face a partial shutdown. There\u2019s another full shutdown deadline a week later. \u2026 By Wednesday afternoon, with Rules in a recess, Johnson pulled the plug and the leadership announced that they were cutting the week short.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of supporting bipartisan border security legislation, House Republicans baselessly impeached Secretary of Homeland Security Mayorkas.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN<\/a>: \u201cThe border compromise would represent a dramatic change of immigration law on lines many Republicans have long supported. \u2026 The Mayorkas impeachment effort \u2026 will have zero practical impact on the crisis at the southern border.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York Times<\/a>: \u201cRepublicans Against Border Enforcement\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rolling Stone<\/a>: \u201cBorder Patrol Supports \u2018Strong\u2019 Immigration Deal. Republicans Don\u2019t Care\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN<\/a>: \u201cTrump, who is hoping to make immigration a key plank of his presidential campaign, has suggested on Truth Social that approving additional resources for the border would make Republicans \u2018look bad.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vox<\/a>: \u201cTrump made this clear when he reportedly urged Republicans in Congress to turn against the bipartisan Senate border security bill scheduled for a vote Wednesday so that he could keep the issue alive through the presidential election.<\/strong> His supporters have largely fallen in line.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201cI think [Republicans] are making a terrible mistake if they vote for the bill.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201cPlease blame it on me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johnson\u2019s hypocrisy is on full display \u2013 he previously railed against \u201csingle-party impeachment\u201d and opposed the bipartisan border security legislation despite repeatedly calling for action to secure the border and saying it \u201cis a job for Congress.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaker Mike Johnson<\/a>: \u201cThe founders of this country warned us against a single-party impeachment because they feared that it would bitterly and perhaps irreparably divide our nation.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johnson<\/a>: \u201cI hope and pray that future congresses can and will exercise greater restraint.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johnson<\/a>: \u201cOur immigration system is broken. Reforming that system is a job for Congress.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johnson<\/a>: \u201cThe crisis at our southern border has deteriorated to such an extent that significant action can wait no longer.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johnson<\/a>: \u201cWe must insist \u2014 must insist \u2014 that the border be the top priority.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the NY-03 special election, both candidates talked about border security, but only Democrat Tom Suozzi could make the case that Democrats have a plan while Republicans are all talk and no action when it comes to securing the border.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NBC News<\/a>: \u201cA decisive victory Tuesday for Tom Suozzi flipped a bellwether New York House district into the Democratic column, thinning an already small House GOP majority and potentially offering a preview of the campaign tactics in 2024 battleground races nationally. \u2026 Republicans went all-in on the issue of immigration as their ticket to victory \u2014 and fell short.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

HuffPost<\/a>: \u201cSuozzi affirmed his commitment to border security in two TV ads, and in the final days of the campaign, slammed Pilip for opposing a bipartisan Senate deal to shore up the border after Trump warned that it would benefit Biden. <\/strong>What\u2019s more, Suozzi and his allies were apparently able to get the latter point across without the benefit of advertising and direct mail.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York Times<\/a>: \u201cWhen Ms. Pilip rejected a bipartisan Senate deal to boost deportations and fortify the border, Mr. Suozzi turned the tables, arguing that she was putting base politics above national security.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN<\/a>: \u201cMany voters in the swing district pointed to immigration as a top issue, <\/strong>something that could also be true for voters across the country during this year\u2019s general election. \u2026 Suozzi argued that he was the only person offering solutions in the race and criticized some Republicans in Congress for killing a bipartisan deal on the border.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wall Street Journal<\/a>: \u201cDemocrat Tom Suozzi won a special election Tuesday on Long Island, flipping a seat in Congress from the GOP and sending a signal that his party can withstand Republican attacks on immigration in swing districts far from the border.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NPR<\/a>: \u201cThis race was dominated by GOP attacks on immigration.<\/strong> Republicans spent more than $8 million on campaign ads in this race, a huge number for a special congressional election. They hammered Democrat Tom Suozzi on immigration on the airwaves. Republican Mazi Pilip even held rallies near a makeshift tent city in Queens that houses migrants. \u2026 Democrats showed they can defend themselves on this issue.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cThe victory also validated Suozzi\u2019s decision to invest heavily in countering the GOP on immigration<\/strong>, suggesting that Democrats in tight races can benefit from talking tougher on the border and highlighting Republicans\u2019 abrupt abandonment of a bipartisan deal on the matter negotiated in Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Republicans are going after each other for pursuing a baseless impeachment sham and admitting that it does nothing to improve border security.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politico<\/a>: \u201c\u2018Dangerous\u2019 or \u2018unambiguous\u2019: Mayorkas impeachment divides House\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Business Insider<\/a>: \u201cEven some Republicans are nervous about how Mayorkas’ impeachment could backfire\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

House Republican Ken Buck<\/a>: \u201cI prosecuted for 25 years. I know what a high crime and misdemeanor are and I know that this doesn\u2019t qualify. \u2026 This is a terrible impeachment. It sets a terrible precedent.<\/strong> \u2026 We\u2019ve got to stop this in this body, or we are going to lose our credibility with the\u2013 further lose our credibility with the American public.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

House Republican Tom McClintock<\/a>: \u201cThis strikes at the very heart of the Constitution’s separation of powers.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Igor Bobic, HuffPost<\/a>: \u201cGOP Sen. Cramer calls impeaching Mayorkas \u2018the dumbest exercise and use of time\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018What’s rich to me is the speaker says the [border] bill in the Senate is\u2026 dead on arrival. And then they proceed impeaching a cabinet secretary, which is obviously dead on arrival.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senate Republican Shelley Moore Capito<\/a>: \u201cI don\u2019t think impeachment was something intended to be brought up every three months or every two months.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CBS News<\/a>: \u201cSen. James Lankford, an Oklahoma Republican, told reporters that he expects the effort to fall short in the Senate. \u2018It\u2019ll fail in the Senate,\u2019 Lankford said. \u2018If I could use the House term, it\u2019ll be dead on arrival when it comes over.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
