As Trump takes part in a nominating process full of confusion and turmoil, the Michigan GOP continues to completely embrace Trump and his extreme MAGA agenda while facing bankruptcy and a fierce leadership battle that has completely derailed the party. The only thing Michigan Republicans are on track to accomplish in 2024 is to once again lose the state this November.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ahead of the state\u2019s primary, the Michigan GOP is in complete structural chaos and disarray.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/12\/20\/politics\/michigan-gop-financial-turmoil-infighting-invs\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>:<strong> \u201c\u2018Incompetent dumpster fire\u2019: <\/strong>Michigan GOP rocked by financial turmoil and infighting\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cKristina Karamo \u2013 a former community college professor with limited political experience \u2013 became the head of the state party in February after pushing far-right election conspiracy theories<\/strong> and promising to end the party\u2019s reliance on traditional wealthy donors. Now, some of the pro-Trump party members who voted Karamo into office have soured on her leadership and accuse her administration of working to destroy the party by failing to fundraise and sparking division among the party rank-and-file.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/17\/us\/politics\/michigan-republican-presidential-contest.html\">New York Times<\/a>: <strong>\u201cMichigan\u2019s G.O.P. Nominating Process Appears Headed For Chaos\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA fight for control of the G.O.P. in the crucial battleground state <strong>plunged Republicans there deeper into a political maelstrom, with rival factions potentially barreling toward hosting dueling nominating conventions.<\/strong> As if things weren\u2019t already confusing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/feb\/26\/michigan-republican-party-presidential-primaries\">The Guardian<\/a>: \u201cRight now, two warring factions have scheduled their own meetings, and<strong> it\u2019s not totally clear which meeting\u2019s delegates will count towards the presidential nomination.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/michigan-gop-presidential-convention-nominating-c39147c98073eea712611648b31345b8\">Associated Press<\/a>: <strong>\u201cMichigan Republicans plan dueling conventions for presidential nomination as turmoil continues\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2024\/02\/17\/michigan-republican-party-gop-infighting-shakes-up-presidential-primary-donald-trump-kristina-karamo\/72604794007\/\">The Detroit News<\/a>: <strong>\u201cSome of the meetings were marked by feuding, shouting and the presence of police. <\/strong>At the convention in Genesee County, a group whose members dubbed themselves the \u2018MAGA Midnight Riders\u2019 attempted to take over. In Oakland County, Kristina Karamo, whom some Republicans believe is still chairwoman of the Michigan GOP, was both applauded and heckled. At one point, Karamo could be heard telling one critic to \u2018quit the alcohol.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/michigan-republican-party-rnc-trump-hoekstra-karamo-88d110d19ee2927a83844b9587b7148c\">Associated Press<\/a>: \u201cDueling pro-Trump factions in Michigan throw the swing state\u2019s Republicans into disarray\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThe party\u2019s finances are so dire that Karamo has sued former party leaders so she can get permission to sell the organization\u2019s headquarters. And she\u2019s refusing to leave her post even as former President Donald Trump and national Republicans have installed a new ally in her place.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Michigan Republicans\u2019 problems began when Trump was elected \u2014 and they haven\u2019t known peace ever since.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/politics\/2022\/11\/michigan-republican-party-blames-election-losses-on-tudor-dixon-trump.html#:~:text=Paul%20Cordes%2C%20the%20party%27s%20chief,heading%20into%20the%20general%20election.\">MLive<\/a>: <strong>\u201cMichigan Republican Party blames election losses on Tudor Dixon, Trump\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2023\/08\/michigan-gop-republicans-2024-trump-state-party-blue-wall\/\"><strong>Mother Jones<\/strong><\/a><strong>: \u201cRadicals Took Over the Michigan GOP. Now They Can\u2019t Stop Losing.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJust seven years ago, Donald Trump became the first Republican presidential candidate to win Michigan since George H.W. Bush. But as the state GOP moved further and further to the right, Democrats capitalized on the extremism to string together major victories in 2018, 2020, and 2022, when they took full control of the state government for the first time in four decades. In the wake of this rout, the GOP has doubled down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Michigan GOP ended up having its worst performance in decades. DePerno, Dixon, and Karamo lost by 9, 11, and 14 points, respectively. Democrats took back the state House for the first time in more than a decade and gained control of the state Senate for the first time since 1983. On top of that, Trump-backed congressional candidate John Gibbs lost his bid for a seat by 13 points after successfully primarying freshman GOP Rep. Peter Meijer, who had voted to impeach Trump and belongs to one of Michigan\u2019s wealthiest families.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fake-elector-michigan-republican-df7803fca3862be713d9d6d29fb77e81\">Associated Press<\/a>: <strong>\u201cMichigan\u2019s attorney general filed felony charges Tuesday against 16 Republicans who acted as fake electors for then-President Donald Trump in 2020<\/strong>, accusing them of submitting false certificates that confirmed they were legitimate electors despite Joe Biden\u2019s victory in the state.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>New Michigan GOP chair Pete Hoekstra, another Trump-aligned MAGA extremist, is <\/strong><strong><em>still<\/em><\/strong><strong> fighting to take over the party entering 2024 with its weakest operation yet \u2013 all because of Trump.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgemi.com\/michigan-government\/trump-backs-hoekstra-over-karamo-michigan-gop-feud\">Bridge Michigan<\/a>: \u201cDonald Trump on Friday recognized Pete Hoekstra as chair of the Michigan Republican Party, throwing his political weight behind the former ambassador amid an ongoing leadership dispute.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cHoekstra will \u2018make The Republican Party of Michigan GREAT AGAIN, and has my Complete and Total Endorsement to be its Chairman,\u2019 <\/strong>Trump wrote on his social media site, Truth Social.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rollcall.com\/2017\/08\/02\/hoekstra-trumps-pick-for-ambassador-has-views-at-odds-with-the-dutch\/\">Roll Call<\/a>: <strong>\u201cHoekstra was a consistent opponent of LGBT rights in Congress, earning a zero rating from the Human Rights Campaign for each Congress in which he served, except for one, in which he earned a 10 percent score.
