In response to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell\u2019s endorsement of Donald Trump, <\/em>DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement (with some help from McConnell himself): <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTake it from Mitch McConnell: Donald Trump is morally and practically responsible for January 6<\/a>, when he fed lies to a mob<\/a> that attacked our democracy. He makes outrageous and inappropriate<\/a> attacks on entire ethnic groups<\/a> and meets with white nationalists and antisemites<\/a>. His assertion that the U.S. shouldn\u2019t defend our democratic allies is wrong<\/a>. He makes the GOP look nasty and chaotic<\/a>. And his efforts to overturn the last election have totally discredited him<\/a> as a candidate for president. That\u2019s what McConnell thinks about Trump, and we couldn\u2019t agree more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mitch McConnell said Donald Trump is \u201cpractically and morally responsible\u201d for January 6 because he \u201cfed lies\u201d \u201cinto the largest megaphone on planet Earth.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

C-SPAN<\/a>: \u201cMinority Leader McConnell Says President Trump \u2018Practically and Morally Responsible\u2019 for January 6 Attack on Capitol\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

McConnell<\/a>: \u201cThere’s no question, none, that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of [January 6]. <\/strong>\u2026 The people who stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their president \u2026 and having that belief was a foreseeable consequence of the growing crescendo of false statements, conspiracy theories and reckless hyperbole which the defeated president kept shouting into the largest megaphone on planet Earth.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

McConnell<\/a>: \u201cThe mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the president<\/strong> and other powerful people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NPR<\/a>:  \u201cMcConnell rebuked Trump for his actions after the insurrection as well. \u2018He did not do his job. He didn’t take steps so federal law could be faithfully executed and order restored,\u2019 he continued. \u2018No. Instead, according to public reports, he watched television happily \u2014 happily \u2014 as the chaos unfolded,\u2019 he said. \u2018Even after it was clear to any reasonable observer that Vice President Pence was in serious danger.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN<\/a>: \u201c\u2018The Democrats are going to take care of the son of a bitch<\/strong> for us,\u2019 McConnell told two associates just days after the insurrection, referring to the effort to impeach Trump in the Democratic-led House, according to the Times\u2019 reporters. And of Trump\u2019s guilt, McConnell was equally clear-eyed: \u2018If this isn\u2019t impeachable, I don\u2019t know what is,\u2019 he said. There was even talk that McConnell himself might vote to convict Trump in a Senate impeachment trial.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McConnell<\/a>: \u201cI feel exhilarated by the fact that this fellow finally, totally discredited himself. \u2026 [Trump] was pretty thoroughly discredited by this. \u2026 He put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Courier Journal<\/a>: \u201cMcConnell criticized Trump’s suggestion that the U.S. Constitution be terminated and he be re-installed as president, saying anyone who believes that \u2018would have a very hard time being sworn in as president of the United States.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McConnell has condemned Trump\u2019s racist remarks \u2013 including his comment that immigrants are \u201cpoisoning the blood of our country.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politico<\/a>: \u201cMcConnell chides Trump for saying immigration is ‘poisoning the blood’ of US\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMitch McConnell delivered a sharp retort on Tuesday to former President Donald Trump\u2019s recent remark that immigrants are \u2018poisoning the blood of our country.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018Well, it strikes me it didn\u2019t bother him when he appointed Elaine Chao secretary of transportation,\u2019 he replied to reporters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McConnell<\/a>: \u201cBut his attacks on ethnic groups and fellow Republicans need to end. <\/strong>\u2026 I object to a whole series of things that he’s said\u2014vehemently object to them. I think all of that needs to stop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McConnell has called out Trump for saying he would encourage Russia to \u201cdo whatever they want\u201d \u2013 including attack our NATO allies.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrew Desiderio, Punchbowl News<\/a>: \u201c[McConnell] said this of the former president\u2019s NATO comments over the weekend: \u2018I totally disagree with him. And it was extremely unhelpful.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politico<\/a>: \u201cSenate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell stressed Thursday that he disagrees with Donald Trump\u2019s assertion that the United States shouldn\u2019t immediately defend NATO allies. \u2026 \u2018I disagree with that,\u2019 McConnell said. \u2026 \u2018I think he\u2019s wrong on that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McConnell rebuked Trump after he rubbed shoulders with white nationalist and antisemite Nick Fuentes, hosting the Holocaust denier at his Mar-a-Lago estate.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

USA Today<\/a>: \u201cA rising number of Republicans, including Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell, are denouncing Donald Trump for hosting a dinner with white nationalist and antisemitic guests \u2013 but few if any expect the former president to apologize. \u2018There is no room in the Republican Party for antisemitism or white supremacy,\u2019 said McConnell, R-Ky., a frequent antagonist of Trump. \u2018And anyone meeting with people advocating that point of view, in my judgment, is highly unlikely to ever be elected president of the United States.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN<\/a>: \u201cTrump hosted Holocaust denier at Mar-a-Lago estate during visit with Kanye West, a week after announcing 2024 run\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McConnell said Trump is responsible for Republicans\u2019 electoral failures in recent years.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NBC News<\/a>: \u201cMcConnell says Trump fueled ‘candidate quality’ problems in the midterms\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201c\u2018We ended up having a candidate quality test,\u2019 McConnell, R-Ky., told reporters regarding the 2022 election. \u2018Look at Arizona. Look at New Hampshire. And the challenging situation in Georgia as well,\u2019 he said, mentioning states where Trump-endorsed candidates won the primary and lost to Democrats in the general election. In a rare move, McConnell explicitly identified Trump\u2019s influence as problematic in the key Senate races. \u2018Our ability to control the primary outcome was quite limited in \u201822 because the support of the former president proved to be very decisive in these primaries.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NBC News<\/a>: \u201cMcConnell also blamed Trump for tarnishing the party\u2019s image among crucial independent and swing voters, who rejected GOP Senate contenders in the states that decided the majority. He said that the party underperformed in \u2018every state\u2019 \u2014 including the red state of Ohio, which Republicans narrowly won \u2014 and that its performance was \u2018fatal\u2019 in Arizona, New Hampshire and Georgia. \u2018We lost support that we needed among independents and moderate Republicans, primarily related to the view they had of us as a party \u2014 largely made by the former president \u2014 that we were sort of nasty and tended toward chaos,\u2019<\/strong> McConnell said.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York Times<\/a>: \u201cIn conversations with senators and would-be senators, Mr. McConnell is blunt about the damage he believes Mr. Trump has done to the G.O.P., according to those who have spoken to him. Privately, he has declared he won\u2019t let unelectable \u2018goofballs\u2019 win Republican primaries. History doesn\u2019t bode well for such behind-the-scene efforts to challenge Mr. Trump, and Mr. McConnell\u2019s hard sell is so far yielding mixed results.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McConnell thinks Trump is \u201cdiminished,\u201d \u201cnuts,\u201d and \u201cdoesn\u2019t know a lot about the issues\u201d that matter to the American people.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NBC News<\/a>: \u201cMcConnell calls out ‘diminished’ Trump<\/strong>, vows not to bow to his candidates in 2024\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Yorker<\/a>: \u201cBehind Trump\u2019s back McConnell has called [him] \u2018nuts,\u2019<\/strong> and made clear that he considers himself smarter than Trump, and that he \u2018can\u2019t stand him.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McConnell<\/a>: \u201cIt\u2019s pretty obvious he doesn\u2019t know a lot about the issues.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
