Between losing elections<\/a>, \u201cpanic\u201d over resignations<\/a>, and flaming out<\/a> on their own political stunts, we figured Speaker Mike Johnson might not have enough time to set the agenda for today\u2019s House GOP retreat \u2014 so we put one together for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s a list of things House Republicans need to figure out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#1: How to grow a backbone and disobey Trump in order to finally pass a bipartisan border security bill like the one Republicans in Congress killed at Trump\u2019s command \u2013 despite two-thirds of Americans backing the deal.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201cI think [Republicans] are making a terrible mistake if they vote for the bill.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York Times<\/a>: \u201cRepublicans Against Border Enforcement\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rolling Stone<\/a>: \u201cBorder Patrol Supports \u2018Strong\u2019 Immigration Deal. Republicans Don\u2019t Care\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN<\/a>: \u201cTrump, who is hoping to make immigration a key plank of his presidential campaign, has suggested on Truth Social that approving additional resources for the border would make Republicans \u2018look bad.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vox<\/a>: \u201cTrump made this clear when he reportedly urged Republicans in Congress to turn against the bipartisan Senate border security bill scheduled for a vote Wednesday so that he could keep the issue alive through the presidential election.<\/strong> His supporters have largely fallen in line.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#2: New ways to hide from their all-out assault on women\u2019s basic freedoms \u2014 after 125 House Republicans, including Speaker Johnson, sponsored extreme legislation to ban abortion nationwide that could threaten IVF access.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Associated Press<\/a>: \u201cRepublicans block Senate bill to protect nationwide access to IVF treatments\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Business Insider<\/a>: \u201cThis Congress, 125 House Republicans \u2014 including Speaker Mike Johnson \u2014 have cosponsored the \u2018Life at Conception Act,\u2019<\/strong> which states that the term \u2018human being\u2019 includes \u2018all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization, cloning, or other moment at which an individual member of the human species comes into being.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe bill does not include any exception for in vitro fertilization (IVF), a reproductive treatment that allows mothers to fertilize several eggs outside the womb in order to increase the chances of a viable pregnancy.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CBS Mornings<\/a>: \u201cDo you see [standard IVF practices] as murder?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mike Johnson: \u201cIt\u2019s something that we’ve got to grapple with. It\u2019s a brave new world. IVF\u2019s only been invented, I think, in the early \u201870s.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politico<\/a>: \u201cDozens of congressional Republicans have signed onto so-called personhood legislation with no carve-out for embryos in clinics, which, if enacted, would upend how the procedure is practiced in the United States.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

#3: An explanation to America\u2019s seniors for the MAGA plan to gut Social Security and Medicare.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joe Kernen, CNBC<\/a>: \u201cHave you changed your outlook on how to handle entitlements, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump: \u201cSo first of all, there is a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mediaite<\/a>: \u201cDuring a Fox News town hall, President Donald Trump promised to cut entitlements like Medicare and Social Security if he were to win a second term.<\/strong> \u2026 \u2018But if you don\u2019t cut something in entitlements, you will never really deal with the debt,\u2019 town hall co-moderator Martha MacCallum interjected, alluding to social safety programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. \u2018Oh, we\u2019ll be cutting,\u2019 Trump rushed to confirm.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Semafor<\/a>: \u201cThese days, the RSC is best known around Washington as a GOP policy shop responsible for crafting proposals to balance the federal budget, often through changes and cuts to Social Security and Medicare.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Conservative Playbook\u201d by the RSC, led by Chairman Mike Johnson in the 116th Congress<\/a>: \u201cWith our entitlement programs facing dire financial futures and more Americans receiving welfare benefits than ever before, we cannot afford to waste money simply because the federal bureaucracy writes checks to the wrong people or for the wrong amount.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

#4: A plan to rebrand their reputation as the least productive Congress since the Great Depression by putting an end to the petty political games and prioritizing Trump\u2019s political interests over taking real action to make life better for working families.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Punchbowl News<\/a>: \u201cThis is the most chaotic, inefficient and ineffective majority we\u2019ve seen in decades covering Congress.<\/strong> It started this way under former Speaker Kevin McCarthy and has gotten worse under Johnson.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York Times<\/a>: \u201cBut in today\u2019s Republican Party, doing the right thing is considered a transgression, not a virtue \u2014 a sign of unforgivable allegiance to the political establishment. \u2026 House Republicans, beholden to a base that reveres former President Donald J. Trump and detests compromise, have become ungovernable. And it is doubtful that his precipitous downfall will break the fever.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cOne other factor has brought the House Republicans to this point. That is the person and example of Donald Trump, the former president. <\/strong>Trump put governing by chaos on steroids (if one can call what he did governing) and in doing so produced a group of Mini-Mes, symbolized most by the politician who brought down McCarthy on Tuesday, Rep. Matt Gaetz (Fla.). This is the kind of leadership the party now offers the country.\u201d
