After Trump\u2019s Supreme Court justices cast the deciding votes to kill <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, his extremist allies have ramped up their deeply out-of-touch attacks on IVF across the country, and blocked efforts to protect access to these critical treatments. If MAGA Republicans wanted to protect IVF for American families, they would have already done it. Instead, they\u2019re pressing ahead with their all-out assault on our basic rights \u2013 and showing the American people that the future of women\u2019s health care is on the ballot this November.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Donald Trump overturned <\/strong><strong><em>Roe v. Wade<\/em><\/strong><strong>, paving the way for GOP attacks on IVF in Alabama.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-features\/alabama-fetal-personhood-ivf-abortion-1235018366\/\">Rolling Stone<\/a>: \u201cAlabama\u2019s War on Women\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday, Marshall is the attorney general of Alabama, and just a few months ago, the state\u2019s Supreme Court used the same logic \u2014 that life begins at conception, therefore an embryo is legally indistinguishable from a living child \u2014 in a decision that was <strong>responsible for shutting down IVF clinics across the state.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe ruling was a triumph for the fetal-personhood movement, a nationwide crusade to endow fertilized eggs, embryos, and fetuses with constitutional rights. <strong>Personhood has been the Holy Grail for the anti-abortion movement since Roe v. Wade was decided in 1973, but outlawing abortion \u2014 at any stage of pregnancy, for any reason \u2014 is just the start of what legal recognition of embryos\u2019 rights could mean for anyone who can get pregnant\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy that time, <strong>conservative groups like the Heritage Foundation, Eagle Forum of Alabama, and the Alabama Policy Institute were mobilizing to oppose IVF protections.<\/strong> The American Action Fund sent texts declaring that lawmakers who supported reinstating IVF in Alabama were voting to protect those \u2018who intentionally [cause] the death of an unborn child.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/24\/health\/alabama-ivf-roe-v-wade\/index.html#:~:text=That%20decision%20is%20the%20first,Roe%20v.%20Wade%20in%202022.\">CNN<\/a>: <strong>\u201cHow the reversal of Roe v. Wade led to the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that frozen embryos are children\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/25\/us\/politics\/alabama-ivf-ruling-republicans-democrats.html\">New York Times<\/a>: <strong>\u201c[The Alabama ruling was] made possible by the Supreme Court\u2019s overturning of Roe v. Wade in its 2022 Dobbs decision, which was a result of Mr. Trump\u2019s appointment of three justices.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trump\u2019s extreme anti-choice allies \u2014 including the Project 2025 groups his campaign is already collaborating with \u2014 are pushing to gut IVF access. <\/strong><strong><br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/donald-trump-deep-ties-anti-ivf-movement_n_65f366f9e4b0b4d0b898d31e\">HuffPost<\/a>: \u201cDonald Trump Has Deep Ties To Anti-IVF Movement\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLike many Republicans, Trump\u2019s words of support don\u2019t align with his past actions on IVF. <strong>The current Republican presidential nominee \u2015 who has repeatedly bragged about his role in repealing federal abortion protections \u2015 has deep ties to extreme right-wing organizations that actively oppose IVF.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile in the White House, <strong>Trump and his administration praised, appointed and worked with some of the nation\u2019s most extreme thought leaders who believe the IVF process is akin to murder.<\/strong> <strong>Trump hosted the Alabama Supreme Court chief justice who wrote the IVF ruling twice: once during his 2016 campaign and in 2018 at the White House. <\/strong>(This is the same chief justice who recently appeared on a QAnon conspiracist\u2019s show.)\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/04\/01\/anti-abortion-movement-ivf-war-00149766\">Politico<\/a>: <strong>\u201cAnti-abortion advocates worked for five decades to topple Roe v. Wade. They\u2019re now laying the groundwork for a yearslong fight to curb in vitro fertilization.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince the Alabama Supreme Court ruled last month that frozen embryos are children, <strong>the Heritage Foundation and other conservative groups have been strategizing how to convince not just GOP officials but evangelicals broadly that they should have serious moral concerns about fertility treatments like IVF and that access to them should be curtailed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe groups are not advocating banning IVF but <strong>want new restrictions that would significantly curtail access to the procedure, such as imposing more regulations on fertility clinics, limiting the number of embryos that can be created or transferred to the uterus at one time, and banning pre-implantation genetic testing<\/strong>, which they argue allows parents to discriminate against their embryos on the basis of sex, disabilities like Down Syndrome or other factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cOrganizations including Heritage, former Vice President Mike Pence\u2019s group Advancing American Freedom, and the Southern Baptist Convention\u2019s public advocacy-focused Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission <\/strong>have worked behind the scenes over the last few weeks to distribute talking points, circulate policy recommendations and educate Republican officials and their staff about their ethical concerns with how IVF is commonly practiced in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/21\/magazine\/heritage-foundation-kevin-roberts.html\">New York Times<\/a>: <strong>\u201cRoberts told me that he views Heritage\u2019s role today as \u2018institutionalizing Trumpism.\u2019 <\/strong>This includes leading Project 2025, a transition blueprint that outlines a plan to consolidate power in the executive branch, dismantle federal agencies and recruit and vet government employees to free the next Republican president from a system that Roberts views as stacked against conservative power. The lesson of Trump\u2019s first year in office, Roberts told me, is that <strong>\u2018the Trump administration \u2026 simply got a slow start. And Heritage and our allies in Project 2025 believe that must never be repeated.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/11\/13\/trump-loyalists-2024-presidential-election\">Axios<\/a>: <strong>\u201cThis is undeniably a Trump-driven operation.<\/strong> The biggest tell: Johnny McEntee \u2014 one of Trump&#8217;s closest White House aides, and his most fervent internal loyalty enforcer \u2014 is a senior adviser to Project 2025. One of the most powerful architects is Stephen Miller, a top West Wing adviser for the Trump administration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/04\/26\/trump-2024-fec-00154727\">Politico<\/a>: \u201cOn Tuesday, the Trump campaign sent a letter to pro-Trump, external organizations asking them to attend an \u2018entirely off-the-record, private,\u2019 and \u2018invite-only\u2019 meeting with senior campaign officials, according to a copy of the letter obtained by POLITICO. The sit-down, which the letter describes as a \u2018meeting of the political minds,\u2019 is <strong>aimed at discussing \u2018collaborat[ion]\u2019 and \u2018priorities and plans\u2019 for the general election<\/strong>.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Senate Republicans already blocked IVF protections and over 100 House Republicans cosponsored the Life at Conception Act, which could rip away IVF access from families nationwide.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mattyglesias\/status\/1770549162183885139?s=20\">Matthew Yglesias, Bloomberg<\/a>: <strong>\u201cIn case anyone is still covering the IVF question, today\u2019s new Republican Study Committee budget specifically endorses the idea that embryos have the full legal rights of persons under the 14th Amendment.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/congress-ivf-access-abortion-alabama-bill-ruling-7f68248f36900d4583d9b181f3b4e380\">Associated Press<\/a>: <strong>\u201cRepublicans block Senate bill to protect nationwide access to IVF treatments\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/house-republicans-life-at-conception-ivf-exception-2024-2?utm_source=copy-link&amp;utm_campaign=business-sf&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=topbar\">Business Insider<\/a>: \u201cMost House Republicans have cosponsored a bill declaring that life begins from the moment of conception, a position under increased scrutiny after the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos are \u2018unborn children.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThis Congress, 125 House Republicans \u2014 including Speaker Mike Johnson \u2014 have cosponsored the \u2018Life at Conception Act,\u2019<\/strong> which states that the term \u2018human being\u2019 includes \u2018all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization, cloning, or other moment at which an individual member of the human species comes into being.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThe bill does not include any exception for in vitro fertilization (IVF), a reproductive treatment that allows mothers to fertilize several eggs outside the womb in order to increase the chances of a viable pregnancy.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/personhood-bills-ivf-restrictions-alabama-rcna140228\">NBC News<\/a>: \u201cBut with the landmark Roe ruling protecting those rights gone, efforts by conservative lawmakers and judges to advance <strong>fetal personhood bills pose a real threat to some fertility treatments, including IVF<\/strong>, reproductive rights advocates say.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/02\/27\/republicans-alabama-ivf-ruling-00143391\">Politico<\/a>: \u201cDozens of congressional Republicans have signed onto so-called personhood legislation with <strong>no carve-out for embryos in clinics, which, if enacted, would upend how the procedure is practiced in the United States.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reality check: The majority of Americans overwhelmingly reject the MAGA&nbsp; agenda to rip away women\u2019s reproductive freedoms \u2014 and Republicans will pay for it once again this November.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/538\/ivf-abortion-access-shape-2024-election\/story?id=108301112\">ABC News<\/a>: <strong>\u201cAmericans continue to support IVF and abortion access\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe vast majority of registered voters, <strong>80 percent, think IVF should be legal.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/navigatorresearch.org\/majorities-of-americans-believe-reproductive-care-should-be-easier-to-access\/\">Navigator Research<\/a>: <strong>\u201cLarge majorities say reproductive care like birth control pills and IVF should be made easier to access, including majorities of Republicans.<\/strong> \u2026 Americans across party lines also say access to fertility planning like IVF should be easier to access, including 72 percent of Democrats, 59 percent of independents, and 53 percent of Republicans.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As Donald Trump and his MAGA minions continue to threaten IVF access, DNC Spokesperson Aida Ross released the following statement:&nbsp; \u201cDonald Trump and his extreme MAGA minions have made clear that they\u2019re coming for every aspect of reproductive freedom, including threatening access to IVF for Americans who want to start a family.
