\u201cColbert told theGrio that while \u2018people have spent the last four years underestimating her capabilities,\u2019 Harris proved during her 2020 vice presidential debates with former Vice President Mike Pence that she can go \u2018toe-to-toe\u2019 with whoever is ultimately on the stage with her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018One of her greatest moments in the campaign last cycle was the \u2018I\u2019m speaking\u2019 interaction with Mike Pence\u2026[it] did her a lot of favors,\u2019 she recalled. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDemocratic strategist Joel Payne similarly noted that Harris \u2018wiped up the floor\u2019 with Pence. He noted that the vice president has been battle-tested throughout her political career and has shown herself as an effective debater and communicator. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018Anytime she\u2019s been asked to do a public back and forth with a Republican, even if you kind of go back to her Senate days when she was a part of those Supreme Court hearings, those are moments where she\u2019s tended to shine,\u2019 Payne explained.\u201d […]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cColbert pointed out that the VP was \u2018superb\u2019 when she, on a whim, traveled to Florida to deliver a fiery speech condemning Florida\u2019s Black history curriculum. On matters of race, she said it\u2019s a \u2018losing issue\u2019 for Republicans. Even if the Republican Party were to choose a Black vice presidential candidate, Colbert maintained, \u2018The contrast isn\u2019t just being a Black man versus a Black woman. The contrast is being competent and actually being conscientious of our racist history.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cColbert said, ultimately, she doesn\u2019t believe any of the Republican VP hopefuls are \u2018equipped to measure up\u2019 in a debate with Harris. \u2018All they have is propaganda, disinformation, and towing Trump\u2019s line,\u2019 she said.\u201d […] <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018I don\u2019t see anybody who is as poised and as substantively prepared for this level of scrutiny compared to Vice President Harris,\u2019 she insisted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAntjuan Seawright, a longtime Democratic strategist, described Harris as \u2018perhaps the most consequential vice president ever to serve\u2019 and who demonstrated that she is \u2018ready to lead on day one.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018If engaging means fighting, she\u2019s ready to do that. If engaging means defiling the opposition, she\u2019s clearly prepared and ready to do that,\u2019 Seawright told theGrio. He continued, \u2018If it means laying out and leaning into a policy agenda that she can proudly say she helped shape the mold, she\u2019s ready to do that. Or even if she\u2019s stepping on the world stage, representing our country, our allies, and our community, she\u2019s ready to do that as well.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSeawright said as a former prosecutor Harris \u2018knows how to prosecute the case and close the case.\u2019 As a history-making Black vice president, he said Harris can also uniquely \u2018speak directly to the needs, concerns, fears and hopes and aspirations of our community with shared values and shared experiences.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPayne said Harris is \u2018held in pretty high regard\u2019 in Black communities not just because of her representation as a Black woman but also because of \u2018what she\u2019s advocated for as a senator and as vice president.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018She\u2019s really stitched together a pretty clear case of issues of real salience for African-American voters,\u2019 he said. Ultimately, as a Democrat, Payne said, \u2018I\u2019m not concerned about Kamala Harris holding her own in a debate setting.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
