For Latino communities who already face health care disparities, this isn\u2019t just about politics \u2014 it\u2019s about our livelihoods and that of our families.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Latino seniors deserve a president who fights for them, and President Biden and Vice President Harris are leading the charge in this fight. Another Trump term means millions of Latinos and working families would lose their health insurance, while health care costs and the cost of prescription drugs would shoot through the roof, putting his Big Pharma donors ahead of American seniors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, President Biden is fighting for us, protecting essential benefits such as Social Security and Medicare, capping insulin at $35\/month, and more. When it comes to taking action, President Biden and Vice President Harris are the only ones fighting for the dignity of our seniors and protecting their hard-earned benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>President Biden has vowed to protect Social Security for America\u2019s seniors, which includes over <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/geriatrics.stanford.edu\/ethnomed\/latino\/introduction\/size.html#:~:text=In%202020%2C%20Americans%20age%2065,21%25%20of%20the%20older%20population.\"><strong>4.6 million<\/strong><\/a><strong> Latino seniors. Meanwhile, Trump and MAGA Republicans want to end Social Security as we know it.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/news\/press\/factsheets\/hispanics-alt.pdf\">Social Security Administration<\/a>: \u201cHispanics benefit from the guaranteed benefit that is annually adjusted for inflation. With longer life expectancies, Hispanics will live more years in retirement and benefit from Social Security&#8217;s cost-of-living protections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn 2021, the average annual Social Security income received by Hispanic men 65 years and older was $14,579, compared to $11,628 for Hispanic women.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/politics\/2024\/3\/12\/24098773\/trump-social-security-medicare-cuts-entitlements-position-2024\">Vox<\/a>: <strong>\u201cTrump just opened the door to Social Security cuts. Take him seriously.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/03\/11\/politics\/trump-entitlements-social-security-medicare\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>: <strong>\u201cTrump suggests he\u2019s open to cuts to Medicare and Social Security<\/strong> after attacking primary rivals over the issue\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2019\/3\/12\/18260271\/trump-medicaid-social-security-medicare-budget-cuts\">Vox<\/a>: <strong>\u201cTrump said he wouldn\u2019t cut Medicaid, Social Security, and Medicare. His 2020 budget cuts all 3.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/winners-losers-trumps-budget-proposal\">FY18<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2018\/2\/6\/16735966\/social-security-disability-insurance\">FY19<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/03\/11\/us\/politics\/trump-budget.html\">FY20<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/medicare-medicaid-social-security-trumps-proposed-budget-slashes-entitlements-campaign-1486595\">FY21<\/a> budgets each proposed billions of dollars in cuts to Social Security programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2019\/3\/12\/18260271\/trump-medicaid-social-security-medicare-budget-cuts\">2019<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/2020\/business\/trump-budget-2021\/#department-of-health-and-human-services\">2020<\/a>: Trump proposed budgets that included hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts to Medicare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>And Trump and his extreme MAGA minions also want to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act, ripping away its life-saving provisions such as capping<\/strong><strong> seniors\u2019 out-of-pocket costs for insulin at $35 per month \u2013 a provision that\u2019s critical for Latinos who suffer from diabetes at a disproportionate rate.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/08\/09\/insulin-cap-reconciliation-latinos-diabetes\">Axios<\/a>: \u201cFailure to include a monthly $35 insulin cap in the climate and health care bill that passed the Senate last weekend could especially affect Latinos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The big picture:<strong> CDC data shows Latinos are 70% more likely than their white non-Hispanic peers to be diagnosed with diabetes.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicare\/issue-brief\/explaining-the-prescription-drug-provisions-in-the-inflation-reduction-act\/\">Kaiser Family Foundation<\/a>: \u201cThe Inflation Reduction Act limits monthly cost sharing for insulin products to no more than $35 for Medicare beneficiaries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/pro\/health-care-policy\/2024\/03\/20\/rsc-budget-republican-health-priorities\">Axios<\/a>: \u201cRSC budget revives conservative health priorities\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Republican Study Committee today laid out a budget proposal that suggests a health policy blueprint if the GOP controls the White House and at least one chamber of Congress next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe health care section\u2026 <strong>calls for killing the Inflation Reduction Act and its drug price provisions. \u2026 It would remove many of the Affordable Care Act\u2019s protections for pre-existing conditions.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/energy-environment\/4543117-trump-biden-inflation-reduction-act-hamper-climate-gains\/\">The Hill<\/a>: \u201cThe [Inflation Reduction Act] has been in Republicans\u2019 crosshairs ever since it passed. If they win the White House and both chambers of Congress in the upcoming election, they\u2019re likely to aim for at least a partial repeal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>President Biden is expanding and protecting the life-changing Affordable Care Act, which led to more than 15 million Latinos gaining health insurance. Before the ACA more than <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/affordable-care-act-obamacare-reduced-racial-and-ethnic-disparities-healthcare\/\"><strong>4-in-10 Latinos were uninsured<\/strong><\/a><strong>. Now, more than three-quarters of Latinos have health coverage.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/affordable-care-act-obamacare-reduced-racial-and-ethnic-disparities-healthcare\/\">CBS News<\/a>: \u201cData shows that prior to the 2013 implementation of the Medicaid expansion \u2014 a provision of the ACA that made more families eligible for Medicaid coverage \u2014 40.2% of the Hispanic population, 24.4% of the Black population, and 14.5% of the White population were uninsured in America. However, by 2021, those numbers dropped significantly to 24.5%, 13.5%, and 8.2%, respectively.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/latino\/latinos-insurance-needs-test-gop-health-care-plan-n734191\">NBC News<\/a>: \u201cHispanics have the highest rate of people without health insurance coverage and <strong>saw the largest drop in people without insurance under Obamacare.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/racial-equity-and-health-policy\/issue-brief\/health-coverage-by-race-and-ethnicity\/\">KFF<\/a>: \u201cSince implementation of the major ACA health coverage expansions in 2014, people of color have experienced large coverage gains that<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>helped narrow the longstanding racial and ethnic disparities in coverage. These gains reflected increases in both Medicaid and private coverage. <strong>Hispanics experienced the largest coverage gain.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/01\/24\/politics\/obamacare-enrollment-record\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>: \u201c<strong>Obamacare sign-ups hit record 21.3 million as Biden pushes his efforts to lower health care costs\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNearly 5 million more people signed up for Obamacare policies for this year compared with last year, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which oversees the Affordable Care Act marketplaces, said Wednesday. <strong>Notably, about a quarter of people selecting plans were new consumers.\u201d<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/4302823-biden-touts-affordable-care-act-enrollment-spike\/\">The Hill<\/a>: \u201cBiden touts Affordable Care Act enrollment spike\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe White House is reporting strong enrollment numbers through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) one week after enrollment began, with 300,000 new customers signing up for plans already.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2019\/06\/02\/aca-linked-reduced-racial-disparities-earlier-diagnosis-treatment-cancer-care\/\">Washington Post<\/a>: <strong>\u201cACA linked to reduced racial disparities, earlier diagnosis and treatment in cancer care\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Meanwhile, Donald Trump wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act, even though it would be devastating for millions of Latino families.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/111471975032811076\">Trump<\/a>: \u201cThe cost of Obamacare is out of control, plus, it\u2019s not good Healthcare. I\u2019m seriously looking at alternatives. We had a couple of Republican Senators who campaigned for 6 years against it, and then raised their hands not to terminate it. Trump doesn\u2019t care\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2023\/11\/why-a-second-trump-term-might-try-again-to-repeal-obamacare.html\">New York Magazine<\/a>: \u201cWhy a Second Trump Presidency Might Try Again to Repeal Obamacare\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Thanks to the ACA, insurance companies can no longer discriminate against people with preexisting conditions, and 6.1 million Latinos gained access to preventative care services without added out-of-pocket costs.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aspe.hhs.gov\/reports\/affordable-care-act-latinos-0#:~:text=These%20benefits%20include%20an%20annual,bone%20mass%20measurement%2C%20and%20mammograms.&amp;text=The%20Affordable%20Care%20Act%20benefits,Improving%20Chronic%20Disease%20Management.\">Dept. of Health and Human Services<\/a>: \u201cThe law requires insurers to cover HIV screening without cost-sharing for individuals at high risk of infection. This is important for Hispanics\/Latinos, who represent 20 percent of the total estimated number of HIV diagnoses among adults and adolescents. <strong>An estimated 6.1 million Latino Americans with private insurance currently have access to expanded preventive services with no cost-sharing because of the Affordable Care Act.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/racial-equity-and-health-policy\/issue-brief\/health-coverage-by-race-and-ethnicity\/\">Kaiser Health News<\/a>: \u201cFollowing the ACA\u2019s enactment in 2010 through 2016, coverage increased across all racial\/ethnic groups, with the largest increases occurring after implementation of the Medicaid and Marketplace coverage expansions in 2014. <strong>Nonelderly Hispanic people had the largest percentage point increase in coverage,<\/strong> with their uninsured rate falling from 32.6% to 19.1%.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/answers\/health-insurance-reform\/can-i-get-coverage-if-i-have-a-pre-existing-condition\/index.html#:~:text=Yes.,that%20new%20health%20coverage%20starts.\">Dept. of Health and Human Services<\/a>: \u201cUnder the Affordable Care Act, health <strong>insurance companies can\u2019t refuse to cover you or charge you more just because you have a \u2018pre-existing condition<\/strong>\u2019 \u2014 that is, a health problem you had before the date that new health coverage starts.
