In Ohio\u2019s 6th district special election, Democratic candidate Michael Kripchak overperformed by about <strong>20 points<\/strong>, a stunning achievement that made a nail-biter out of what was projected to be an easy win for Republican Michael Rulli. In a district that went for Trump by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/playbook\/2024\/06\/12\/dems-get-a-pleasant-election-night-surprise-00162890\">29 points<\/a>, and where Rulli had the financial advantage, voters were once again motivated to reject Trump\u2019s MAGA Republican Party.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Following Democrats\u2019 continued overperformance in electoral contests,<\/em><strong><em> DNC spokesperson Maddy Mundy released the following statement:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRepublicans may have been surprised by their underperformance in Ohio last night, but we weren\u2019t. The best indicator of how voters are feeling heading into November is how they are actually voting at the ballot box, and for the past three years, in special elections across the country, voters have turned out to support Joe Biden and Democrats\u2019 winning platform of safeguarding Americans\u2019 freedoms against MAGA extremism. In 2024, voters continue to prove they understand the dangerous stakes of enabling Trump\u2019s MAGA Republican Party. Come November, Americans across the country will turn out to reject the ultimate MAGA candidate: Donald Trump.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Democrats have won crucial special elections this year as they offer voters a positive and powerful alternative to Trump\u2019s extreme abortion bans and hate-fueled vision for this country. In addition to last night\u2019s performance in Ohio, Democrats have racked up victories early this year in:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Michigan: <\/strong>In April, Michigan voters preserved Democrats\u2019 trifecta in the state after electing Democrats Mai Xiong and Peter Herzberg, who ran campaigns focused on pocketbook issues and reproductive rights. In Herzberg\u2019s case, his support for reproductive freedoms was in contrast to Republican opposition to abortion <a href=\"https:\/\/michiganadvance.com\/2024\/04\/02\/gop-nominee-for-special-michigan-house-election-says-he-opposes-abortion-without-exception\/\">without exceptions<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Alabama: <\/strong>In March, Democrat Marilyn Lands <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/alabama-ivf-abortion-legislature-378c3fa32dcfc2d0401f3893828482af\">flipped a district that Trump won<\/a> in an Alabama state House seat long held by Republicans. Lands centered her campaign on protecting access to reproductive care like abortion and in vitro fertilization in the wake of Trump and MAGA Republicans\u2019 attacks.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>New Hampshire<\/strong>: Democrats Jennifer Mandelbaum and Erik Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhpr.org\/nh-news\/2024-03-13\/democrats-win-nh-house-seats-special-elections-results\">won two special elections for seats<\/a> in the New Hampshire state House.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>New York: <\/strong>In a hotly contested special election in New York\u2019s Third Congressional District, Democrat Tom Suozzi <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/democrats-win-special-election-4-takeaways-new-yorks\/story?id=107215060\">flipped the Republican-held seat<\/a> in part by attacking his opponent\u2019s anti-abortion views.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pennsylvania: <\/strong>PA Dems cemented their House majority in a February special election when Democrat Jim Prokopiak <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/special-election-pennsylvania-swing-county-decide-control-state\/story?id=107067189\">won his battleground district<\/a> in swingy Bucks County by championing reproductive rights.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The results of Ohio 6th\u2019s special election secured one of the strongest electoral swings towards Democrats this cycle, within a series of strong Democratic performances in special elections:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2024\/06\/12\/ohio-special-election-rulli-kripchak\/\"><strong>Washington Post:<\/strong><\/a> \u201cDemocrats\u2019 surprisingly close Ohio election loss, in context\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHigh on that list is how Democrats have done in special elections. A case in point: Tuesday\u2019s sleepy special in Ohio\u2019s 6th District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile virtually nobody paid attention to the race, unheralded and underfunded Democrat Michael Kripchak was losing by less than 10 points in a district that Biden lost in 2020 by 29 points.
