Despite the hollow and hypocritical promises Republicans in Congress are making, their actions speak louder than their words, and it\u2019s clear they have zero interest in protecting IVF. Instead, they\u2019re cozying up to the architects of Trump\u2019s extremist Project 2025 agenda, who are not only attacking access to IVF but call it \u2018eugenics.\u2019 President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Democrats in Congress won\u2019t let Trump and MAGA Republicans strip us of even more of the freedoms our mothers and grandmothers fought to secure decades ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SHOT\/CHASER: Senate Republicans signed onto a statement \u201csupporting\u201d access to IVF\u2026 just to block a bill protecting it the next day.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/anthonyadragna\/status\/1801068518995001653?s=46&amp;t=xm-twpB0gxygAStckNc2bA\">Anthony Adranga, Politico<\/a>: \u201cNew: All 49 Senate Republicans sign onto statement supporting access to IVF:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018We strongly support continued nationwide access to IVF, which has allowed millions of aspiring parents to start and grow their families.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/4720506-senate-republicans-block-ivf-legislation\/\">The Hill<\/a>: <strong>\u201cLegislation to establish a national right to in-vitro fertilization (IVF) was blocked by Senate Republicans on Thursday, <\/strong>amid a push by Democrats to put the GOP on defense over reproductive rights ahead of the November elections\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Right to IVF Act, sponsored by Sens. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.), is a package of four <strong>bills that would both establish a nationwide right to IVF and other assisted reproductive technology, as well as lower the costs of IVF treatment to make it more accessible.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe vote Thursday is the latest in a series set up by Senate Democratic leadership about codifying reproductive rights.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Anti-choice Republicans keep shooting down any bill to protect access to IVF that Democrats introduce.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alannavagianos\/status\/1767659893945725078\">Alanna Vagianos, HuffPost<\/a>: <strong>\u201cJust now: Senate Republicans block a bill to protect IVF &amp; other fertility services for veterans &amp; service members.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/healthcare\/4494243-republicans-block-bill-to-protect-access-to-ivf\/\">The Hill<\/a>: \u201cSenate Republicans blocked an effort Wednesday to pass legislation that would federally protect access to in vitro fertilization (IVF).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><br><\/strong><strong>Speaker MAGA Mike Johnson has said Congress doesn\u2019t need to enact IVF protections \u2014 which checks out, considering he and 124 other House Republicans have supported the Life at Conception Act, which could rip away IVF access from families nationwide.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/03\/14\/politics\/mike-johnson-dismisses-ivf-legislation\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>:<strong> \u201cJohnson dismisses need for IVF legislation as GOP wrestles with reproductive issues\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201c\u2018It\u2019s not my belief that Congress needs to play a role here,\u2019<\/strong> the Louisiana Republican told reporters at the annual Republican issues conference held at The Greenbrier, a resort in West Virginia. \u2018I think this is being handled by the states.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/house-republicans-life-at-conception-ivf-exception-2024-2?utm_source=copy-link&amp;utm_campaign=business-sf&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=topbar\">Business Insider<\/a>: \u201cMost House Republicans have cosponsored a bill declaring that life begins from the moment of conception, a position under increased scrutiny after the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos are \u2018unborn children.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThis Congress, 125 House Republicans \u2014 including Speaker Mike Johnson \u2014 have cosponsored the \u2018Life at Conception Act,\u2019<\/strong> which states that the term \u2018human being\u2019 includes \u2018all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization, cloning, or other moment at which an individual member of the human species comes into being.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThe bill does not include any exception for in vitro fertilization (IVF), a reproductive treatment that allows mothers to fertilize several eggs outside the womb in order to increase the chances of a viable pregnancy.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/personhood-bills-ivf-restrictions-alabama-rcna140228\">NBC News<\/a>: \u201cBut with the landmark Roe ruling protecting those rights gone, efforts by conservative lawmakers and judges to advance <strong>fetal personhood bills pose a real threat to some fertility treatments, including IVF<\/strong>, reproductive rights advocates say.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/02\/27\/republicans-alabama-ivf-ruling-00143391\">Politico<\/a>: \u201cDozens of congressional Republicans have signed onto so-called personhood legislation with <strong>no carve-out for embryos in clinics, which, if enacted, would upend how the procedure is practiced in the United States.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><br><\/strong><strong>These MAGA GOP threats to IVF are made possible by Donald Trump, who has <\/strong><strong><em>bragged<\/em><\/strong><strong> about appointing the Supreme Court justices who helped overturn <\/strong><strong><em>Roe v. Wade,<\/em><\/strong><strong> paving the way for threats to IVF access.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/25\/us\/politics\/alabama-ivf-ruling-republicans-democrats.html\">New York Times<\/a>: <strong>\u201c[The Alabama ruling was] made possible by the Supreme Court\u2019s overturning of Roe v. Wade in its 2022 Dobbs decision, which was a result of Mr. Trump\u2019s appointment of three justices.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/24\/health\/alabama-ivf-roe-v-wade\/index.html#:~:text=That%20decision%20is%20the%20first,Roe%20v.%20Wade%20in%202022.\">CNN<\/a>: <strong>\u201cHow the reversal of Roe v. Wade led to the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that frozen embryos are children\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BidenHQ\/status\/1745277154236260693\">Trump<\/a>: \u201cFor 54 years they were trying to get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/roe-v-wade\"><em>Roe v. Wade<\/em><\/a> terminated, and <strong>I did it, and I\u2019m proud to have done it. \u2026 Nobody else was going to get that done but me,<\/strong> and we did it, and we did something that was a miracle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/110384051064378318\">Trump<\/a>: \u201cAfter 50 years of failure, with nobody coming even close, <strong>I was able to kill <\/strong><strong><em>Roe v. Thank you President TRUMP!!!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/trump-claims-credit-all-abortion-bans-1234736979\/\">Rolling Stone<\/a>: <strong>\u201cTrump Claims Credit for All Abortion Bans\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><br><\/strong><strong>Donald Trump has had deep ties to the anti-IVF movement since he entered office in 2017, even going as far as elevating some hardline proponents to positions of power.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/donald-trump-deep-ties-anti-ivf-movement_n_65f366f9e4b0b4d0b898d31e\">HuffPost<\/a>: \u201cDonald Trump Has Deep Ties To Anti-IVF Movement\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLike many Republicans, Trump\u2019s words of support don\u2019t align with his past actions on IVF. <strong>The current Republican presidential nominee \u2015 who has repeatedly bragged about his role in repealing federal abortion protections \u2015 has deep ties to extreme right-wing organizations that actively oppose IVF.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile in the White House, <strong>Trump and his administration praised, appointed and worked with some of the nation\u2019s most extreme thought leaders who believe the IVF process is akin to murder.<\/strong> <strong>Trump hosted the Alabama Supreme Court chief justice who wrote the IVF ruling twice: once during his 2016 campaign and in 2018 at the White House. <\/strong>(This is the same chief justice who recently appeared on a QAnon conspiracist\u2019s show.)\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe former president also met multiple times while in office with Lila Rose, president and founder of the anti-abortion group Live Action, who recently said she was \u2018proud\u2019 of the Alabama Supreme Court for acknowledging that \u2018a baby conceived via IVF should have the same legal protections as a baby conceived naturally.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cDuring his time as president, Trump appointed several extreme anti-IVF advocates to positions of power,<\/strong> including Tim Wildmon, who served on the Trump administration\u2019s faith advisory council. Wildmon is the president of the American Family Association, an extreme anti-abortion organization that just last week opposed a Mississippi bill aimed at protecting IVF because it would open the door to \u2018procedures like human cloning, designer babies, three-parent babies and even human-animal hybrids.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cHe also appointed a woman who spent much of her career attacking assisted reproductive technologies, such as IVF and surrogacy, to a lifetime federal judicial appointment.<\/strong> Sarah Pitlyk, who was deemed \u2018not qualified\u2019 by the American Bar Association, wrote in multiple rulings that states should treat embryos as humans. Trump put Pitlyk on a shortlist of Supreme Court justice picks. The job went to Amy Coney Barrett, who publicly supported an anti-abortion group that believes IVF should be criminalized.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cTrump has not endorsed any IVF protections on the national or state level. And despite Republican claims of supporting IVF access, they blocked Democrats\u2019 attempt to pass legislation to safeguard fertility treatments on the federal level.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAbortion rights advocates have warned that the anti-choice movement would come for IVF and fertility treatments once <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> fell. <strong>Currently, more than a dozen states are considering laws that would enshrine fetal personhood, threatening IVF and other fertility treatments.\u201d<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Heritage Foundation, which is spearheading Trump\u2019s anti-choice Project 2025, has compared IVF to \u201ceugenics.\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Heritage Foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/life\/report\/why-the-ivf-industry-must-be-regulated\">said<\/a> that Congress should set standards to \u201cprevent the wanton or careless destruction of embryonic human beings,\u201d and <strong>said that the way IVF is practiced in the U.S. amounts to \u201ceugenics.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/04\/01\/anti-abortion-movement-ivf-war-00149766\">Politico<\/a>: <strong>\u201cAnti-abortion advocates worked for five decades to topple Roe v. Wade. They\u2019re now laying the groundwork for a yearslong fight to curb in vitro fertilization.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince the Alabama Supreme Court ruled last month that frozen embryos are children, <strong>the Heritage Foundation and other conservative groups have been strategizing <\/strong>how to convince not just GOP officials but evangelicals broadly that they should have serious moral concerns <strong>about fertility treatments like IVF and that access to them should be curtailed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThose pushing to restrict IVF hope the groundwork the anti-abortion movement laid over the last 50 years will make it easier to persuade evangelicals to support these policies, and <strong>they\u2019re recycling some of the messaging, including linking certain IVF practices with eugenics and calling the fertility industry \u2018dangerous\u2019 and \u2018unregulated.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>President Biden and Democrats will continue to fight to make it easier for families to access and afford IVF treatment.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/senate-democrats-introduce-legislative-protections-ivf-rcna154946\">NBC News<\/a>: <strong>\u201cSenate Democrats introduce legislative protections for IVF\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Right to IVF Act, <\/strong>led by Sens.
