As Americans celebrate the 89th anniversary of Social Security today, Donald Trump and JD Vance are running to enact a Project 2025 agenda that would gut Social Security. In response, <\/em>DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSocial Security has been a lifeline that\u2019s helped millions of Americans retire with dignity for 89 years, but Donald Trump and JD Vance want to put this critical program on the chopping block and leave our seniors out to dry as part of their extreme Project 2025 agenda. Don\u2019t just take it from us \u2014 Trump proposed cuts to Social Security every year he was in office while Vance called programs like Social Security one of the \u2018biggest roadblocks\u2019 to \u2018fiscal sanity.\u2019 The American people won\u2019t let the Trump-Vance ticket leave hardworking Americans out in the cold, and will send Vice President Harris and Governor Walz to the White House to protect seniors\u2019 hard-earned benefits against MAGA Republicans\u2019 dangerous agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donald Trump proposed cuts to Social Security in <\/strong>every single one<\/em><\/strong> of his budgets as president and has railed against the program for years.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump: \u201cSo first of all, there is a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN<\/a>: \u201cFormer President Donald Trump once backed raising the retirement age to 70 and called for privatizing Social Security which he called a \u2018Ponzi scheme\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018We can also raise the age for receipt of full Social Security benefits to seventy,\u2019 he wrote.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mediaite<\/a>: \u201cDuring a Fox News town hall, President Donald Trump promised to cut entitlements like Medicare and Social Security if he were to win a second term.<\/strong> \u2026 \u2018But if you don\u2019t cut something in entitlements, you will never really deal with the debt,\u2019 town hall co-moderator Martha MacCallum interjected, alluding to social safety programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. \u2018Oh, we\u2019ll be cutting,\u2019 Trump rushed to confirm.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cHis avowed stance, however, is at odds with Trump\u2019s own record as president: Each of his White House budget proposals included cuts to Social Security and Medicare programs.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vox<\/a>: \u201cTrump said he wouldn\u2019t cut Medicaid, Social Security, and Medicare. His 2020 budget cuts all 3.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump\u2019s FY18<\/a>, FY19<\/a>, FY20<\/a>, and FY21<\/a> budgets each proposed billions of dollars in cuts to Social Security programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JD Vance called programs like Social Security the \u201cbiggest roadblocks\u201d to \u201cfiscal sanity,\u201d said Rick Scott\u2019s budget plan to sunset Social Security had \u201ca lot of good things in it,\u201d and praised Paul Ryan\u2019s budget that included cuts to the program.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance<\/a>: \u201c[Social Security and Medicare] are the biggest roadblocks to any kind of real fiscal sanity.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance<\/a>: \u201cThe way forward is as obvious as it is politically difficult: \u2026 reform current entitlements and avoid enacting new ones.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance<\/a>: \u201cTomorrow, Rep. Paul Ryan will release his highly anticipated budget plan. \u2026 with serious changes to Social Security and Medicare \u2026 I\u2019m hoping that when the dust settles, we\u2019re having a more intelligent conversation about spending cuts than we\u2019ve had during my lifetime.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance<\/a>: \u201cWe\u2019ve got to, frankly, stop spending so much on welfare benefits and start having a lot more workers who are paying into the system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HuffPost<\/a>: \u201cIn a 2010 blog post, Vance \u2014 then writing under the name J.D. Hamel \u2014 argued that Social Security and Medicare were among the biggest drivers of large federal budget deficits, but that neither Democrats nor Republicans had the political will to enact deep cuts to either federal entitlement program.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018The political obstacles intimidate more than the practical problems,\u2019 Vance wrote in the post on a personal blog site he used while in law school at Yale. \u2018The party of, umm, limited government \u2014 the Republican Party \u2014 is also the party of the aging white person. The party\u2019s only solid constituency thus depends on the Medicare and Social Security Benefits that are the biggest roadblocks to any kind of real fiscal sanity.<\/strong> The Democrats are similarly hopeless.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance on Rick Scott\u2019s budget to sunset Social Security<\/a>: \u201cBut there are a lot of good things in it.<\/strong> And most importantly, I like that Rick Scott actually proposed a set of ideas for what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The extremists behind the Trump-Vance ticket\u2019s Project 2025 agenda want to raise the Social Security retirement age and cut Americans\u2019 hard-earned benefits by thousands of dollars each year.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Axios<\/a>: \u201cThis is undeniably a Trump-driven operation.<\/strong> The biggest tell: Johnny McEntee \u2014 one of Trump’s closest White House aides, and his most fervent internal loyalty enforcer \u2014 is a senior adviser to Project 2025. One of the most powerful architects is Stephen Miller, a top West Wing adviser for the Trump administration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Week<\/a>: \u201cMany of Trump\u2019s indicated plans for a second term fall in line with the Project 2025 outline.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York Times<\/a>: \u201cRoberts told me that he views Heritage\u2019s role today as \u2018institutionalizing Trumpism.\u2019 <\/strong>This includes leading Project 2025, a transition blueprint that outlines a plan to consolidate power in the executive branch, dismantle federal agencies and recruit and vet government employees to free the next Republican president from a system that Roberts views as stacked against conservative power. The lesson of Trump\u2019s first year in office, Roberts told me, is that \u2018the Trump administration \u2026 simply got a slow start. And Heritage and our allies in Project 2025 believe that must never be repeated.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
