In response to <\/em>new reporting<\/em><\/a> on JD Vance championing an 2017 report from the Heritage Foundation, a Project 2025 architect,<\/em> DNC Spokesperson Aida Ross released the following statement: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJD Vance thought the Heritage Foundation\u2019s calls to make abortion \u2018unthinkable\u2019 and attacks on IVF were so \u2018admirable\u2019 that he penned an endorsement of their plan. Now, Vance is running with Donald Trump, with a dangerous Project 2025 agenda to ban abortion nationwide with or without Congress and threaten IVF access \u2014 a dangerous blueprint written and promoted by the same far-right extremists. The Trump-Vance ticket\u2019s attacks on our reproductive freedoms are dangerous, out-of-touch, and wildly unpopular with the American people, who are ready to reject them this November.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JD Vance championed a report from the organization leading Project 2025, which called to ban abortion nationwide, opposed IVF, and more.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York Times<\/a>: \u201cYears before he became the Republican vice-presidential nominee, JD Vance endorsed a little-noticed 2017 report by the Heritage Foundation that proposed a sweeping conservative agenda to restrict sexual and reproductive freedoms and remake American families.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn a series of 29 separate essays, conservative commentators, policy experts, community leaders and Christian clergy members opposed the spread of in vitro fertilization and other fertility treatments,<\/strong> describing those treatments as harmful to women. They praised the rapidly expanding number of state laws restricting abortion rights and access, saying that the procedure should become \u2018unthinkable\u2019 in America\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMr. Vance, then known as the author of a best-selling memoir, became a champion of the project. He wrote the introduction and praised the volume as \u2018admirable,\u2019 and was the keynote speaker at the public release of the report at Heritage\u2019s offices in Washington\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTaken together, the pieces in the report amount to an effort to instruct Americans on what their families should be, when to grow them and the best way to raise their children. Authors argued in the 2017 report that women should become pregnant at younger ages and that a two-parent, heterosexual household was the \u2018ideal\u2019 environment for children\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of the essays takes a deeply skeptical view of in vitro fertilization and other fertility treatments, arguing that they cause women to be \u2018lured into the belief that they can have children whenever they are finally ready.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance has cozied up to Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts in the past and praised Project 2025 \u2014 which is \u201c<\/strong>undeniably a Trump-driven operation<\/strong><\/a>\u201d \u2014 as containing \u201cgood ideas.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance<\/a>: \u201cI\u2019ve reviewed a lot of [Project 2025]. There are some good ideas in there.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Republic<\/a>: \u201cProject 2025 Leader Is Overjoyed by Trump\u2019s Vice Presidential Pick\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nick Corasaniti, New York Times<\/a>: \u201c[Kevin Roberts] reacted to the news [of Vance\u2019s VP selection] \u2018with a broad smile on my face\u2019 and said that \u2018privately, we were really rooting for him.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gram Slattery, Reuters<\/a>: \u201cVance is very close to Heritage and even wrote the [foreword] for a book from the think tank\u2019s president. Project 2025 is of course organized by Heritage.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vox<\/a>: \u201cKevin Roberts, the president of the right-wing Heritage Foundation and the driving force behind Project 2025, told Ward that \u2018[Vance] is absolutely going to be one of the leaders \u2014 if not the leader \u2014 of our movement.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance\u2019s anti-choice record includes wanting abortion to be \u201cillegal nationally,\u201d criticizing exceptions for rape and incest, comparing abortion to slavery, and more.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN<\/a>: \u201cJD Vance said in 2022 he \u2018would like abortion to be illegal nationally\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDuring a podcast interview in January 2022, then-candidate JD Vance said he \u2018certainly would like abortion to be illegal nationally\u2019 and was \u2018sympathetic\u2019 to the view that a national ban was necessary to stop women from traveling across states to obtain an abortion.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newsweek<\/a>: \u201cJ.D. Vance Backs \u2018National Standard\u2019 for Abortions\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daily Beast<\/a>: \u201cJ.D. Vance suggested he would support prohibiting abortion even in cases of rape and incest\u2014and dismissed those catalysts as \u2018inconvenient.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vice<\/a>: \u201cJD Vance Compared Abortion to Slavery\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hill<\/a>: \u201cDuring his campaign for Senate, Vance applauded the overturning of Roe v. Wade and supported Texas\u2019s ban on abortion, which does not allow exceptions other than cases where the mother\u2019s life is at risk.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018Two wrongs don\u2019t make a right,\u2019 he said in 2021 when asked whether abortion laws should allow for exceptions for rape and incest.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

JD Vance<\/a>: \u201cI think that what I really think on \u2013 so first of all, the <\/strong>Dobbs<\/em><\/strong> decision, everybody knows, overruled <\/strong>Roe v. Wade<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 I think that was the right decision.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NBC News<\/a>: \u201cSenate Republicans block Democratic bill codifying Roe v. Wade abortion protections\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSenate Republicans on Wednesday blocked legislation led by Democrats to revive the protections of Roe v. Wade in the wake of the Supreme Court eliminating the nationwide right to abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Republicans who voted against include: JD Vance.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Letter Signed by Vance and Other Members of Congress<\/a>: \u201cAbortion is not health care\u2014it is a brutal act that destroys the life of an unborn child and hurts women. Congress did not authorize HHS to extend special provisions for abortion such as these under the guise of \u2018health care.\u2019 The Proposed Rule unlawfully thwarts the enforcement of compassionate laws protecting unborn children and their mothers, and directs health care providers to defy lawful court orders and search warrants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Trump-Vance ticket is in lockstep, pushing an extreme anti-choice Project 2025 agenda as their allies plot to ban abortion nationwide and rip away reproductive care. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

JD Vance: \u201cMy view is that Donald Trump is the leader of the Republican Party and his views on abortion are going to be the views that dominate this party and drive this party forward.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe attacks on mifepristone and resurrection of Comstock stand out as particularly harmful proposals, but they are only two of the dozens of ways the Republicans behind Project 2025 envision restricting access to abortion and contraception if they win the White House next year.<\/strong> Elsewhere in the document, there are proposals to eliminate the morning-after pill from the Affordable Care Act\u2019s contraceptive mandate under the rationale that it is a \u2018potential abortifacient.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Axios<\/a>: \u201cThis is undeniably a Trump-driven operation.<\/strong> The biggest tell: Johnny McEntee \u2014 one of Trump’s closest White House aides, and his most fervent internal loyalty enforcer \u2014 is a senior adviser to Project 2025. One of the most powerful architects is Stephen Miller, a top West Wing adviser for the Trump administration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York Times<\/a>: \u201cRoberts told me that he views Heritage\u2019s role today as \u2018institutionalizing Trumpism.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politico<\/a>: \u201cOrganizations including Heritage, former Vice President Mike Pence\u2019s group Advancing American Freedom, and the Southern Baptist Convention\u2019s public advocacy-focused Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission <\/strong>have worked behind the scenes over the last few weeks to distribute talking points, circulate policy recommendations and educate Republican officials and their staff about their ethical concerns with how IVF is commonly practiced in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

REALITY CHECK: Attacks on reproductive rights, like Trump and Vance\u2019s anti-choice Project 2025 agenda to rip away reproductive freedoms, are wildly unpopular.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

USA Today<\/a>: \u201cAmericans overwhelmingly oppose the next goal of many anti-abortion activists, to enact a federal law banning abortion nationwide.<\/strong> By 80%-14%, those surveyed opposed that idea, including 65% of Republicans and 83% of independents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN Poll<\/a>: \u201cAbout two-thirds (65%) oppose the 2022 Supreme Court decision, Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization, and 34% approve, numbers that have remained effectively unchanged in CNN\u2019s polling across the nearly two years since the ruling. Those who strongly disapprove of the decision continue to outnumber those who strongly approve by a more than 2-to-1 margin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA 69% majority who disapprove of overturning Roe, including 82% of those who strongly disapprove, say that federal politicians should work to pass laws ensuring national abortion access.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
