After JD Vance called gun violence a \u201cfact of life,\u201d <\/em>DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet\u2019s be clear: no matter what Donald Trump and JD Vance say, tragedies like this do not need to be a \u2018fact of life,\u2019 and we don\u2019t just have to \u2018get over it\u2019 when Americans, including young children, are violently murdered. But there\u2019s another choice: Vice President Harris and Governor Walz are ready to stand up to the gun lobby to protect our communities. Trump and Vance have railed against commonsense reforms and federal bipartisan gun safety legislation that would protect innocent lives. Donald Trump has no shame \u2014 he told school shooting victims to \u201cget over it,\u201d touts his close ties to the NRA, and continues to bend to the gun lobby\u2019s will at every turn.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN<\/a>: \u201cA slew of 2024 GOP presidential hopefuls courted gun rights activists Friday at a National Rifle Association convention in Indianapolis that took place in the wake of mass shootings in Kentucky and Tennessee in recent days. Former President Donald Trump \u2026 attended the gathering.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NRA has spent tens of millions to support Trump\u2019s campaigns \u2014 and Trump in turn has vowed to not go \u201cup against them.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yahoo News<\/a>: \u201cThe gun-rights group spent $54 million during the 2016 election cycle, including $30 million to help Donald Trump get elected president.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fortune<\/a>: \u201cFor instance, in 2020, the NRA alone spent over $12 million campaigning against Biden and another $4.5 million in favor of Donald Trump<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump<\/a>: \u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019ll be going up against them. I really think the NRA wants to do what\u2019s right.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York Times<\/a>: \u201cAt the N.R.A.\u2019s annual convention in 2017, Mr. Trump assured the group\u2019s members, \u2018You came through for me, and I am going to come through for you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance counted gun violence among \u201cfake problems,\u201d and called efforts to address it \u201ca huge distraction\u201d \u2013 and he opposes commonsense gun safety reforms like expanded background checks and red flag laws while cozying up to the NRA.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NRA<\/a>: \u201cNRA Applauds President Trump\u2019s Selection of Senator J.D. Vance as His Running Mate\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cThe National Rifle Association praised Vance\u2019s record on gun rights. Vance has rejected calls for tougher gun laws and dismissed a Democrat-led effort to ban bump stocks, which allow semiautomatic rifles to fire hundreds of bullets per minute, as \u2018a huge distraction.\u2019 In 2022, Vance said he favored abolishing the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which enforces federal gun laws.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hill<\/a>: \u201c\u2018I think it\u2019s a huge distraction,\u2019<\/strong> said Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), who is believed to be on Trump\u2019s shortlist to be his running mate. \u2018This is week three of Chuck Schumer focusing on fake problems<\/strong> instead of real problems.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NBC News<\/a>: \u201c\u2018I think that we have to ask ourselves: What is the real gun violence problem in this country, and are we legislating in a way that solves fake problems? Or solves real problems?\u2019<\/strong> Vance told reporters\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVance also said he was concerned the bill could \u2018end up just inhibiting the rights of law-abiding Americans.\u2019 Pressed about the 58 people who were killed in a mass shooting in Las Vegas in 2017, he said: \u2018The question is: How many people would have been shot alternatively? And you have to ask yourself the question: Will anyone actually not choose a bump stock because Chuck Schumer passes a piece of legislation?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance<\/a>: \u201cNone of these [commonsense gun safety reforms] would improve the gun violence problem in this country. All of them satisfy the urge to \u2018do something\u2019 without actually doing anything useful, at great cost to the rights of people who follow the law.
