{"id":1048062,"date":"2024-09-13T12:18:43","date_gmt":"2024-09-13T16:18:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/democrats.org\/?p=1048062"},"modified":"2024-09-13T12:18:44","modified_gmt":"2024-09-13T16:18:44","slug":"dnc-statement-on-the-anniversary-of-the-violence-against-women-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/democrats.org\/news\/dnc-statement-on-the-anniversary-of-the-violence-against-women-act\/","title":{"rendered":"DNC Statement on the Anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>DNC Chair Jaime Harrison,&nbsp; DNC Women\u2019s Caucus Chair Lottie Shackelford, and DNC Native American Caucus Chair Clara Pratte released the following statement to recognize the anniversary of the signing of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA):&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThirty years ago today, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) broke new ground and made historic strides as the first-ever federal legislation aimed at combatting sexual assault, stalking, and domestic violence. Introduced by then-Senator Joe Biden, the VAWA has led to significant declines in domestic violence and each reauthorization has strengthened and expanded its provisions to combat the scourge of gender-based violence. The Violence Against Women Act saves lives, and on its 30th anniversary, the important role it plays in helping victims and survivors cannot be understated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThroughout the past four years, President Biden and Vice President Harris have worked to build on the progress of the VAWA. In 2022, they secured record funding for the VAWA reauthorization, closed the boyfriend loophole, and issued a national plan to end gender-based violence. The reauthorization also expanded the special criminal jurisdiction of Tribal courts to cover non-Native perpetrators of sexual assault strengthening tribal sovereignty and further protecting Native Women. While we have come far, we know there is still more work to do.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn Kamala Harris, we have a proven fighter who has defended child sexual assault victims, gone after predators who abused women, and championed reproductive freedoms nationwide. As president, she will continue to stand up for women, protect survivors, and work to expand the VAWA.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe same can\u2019t be said for extreme Republicans. With 172 House Republicans voting against the VAWA\u2019s renewal in 2021, it\u2019s clear they aren\u2019t ready or willing to be partners in combating violence against women. That\u2019s why it\u2019s imperative we rally together to vote for Democrats up-and-down the ballot.
