In response to MAGA GOP Senator Mike Rounds <\/em>introducing<\/em><\/a> a bill to follow through on Project 2025\u2019s plans to abolish the Department of Education, <\/em>DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDonald Trump is hellbent on abolishing the Department of Education \u2014 and his MAGA lackeys are already pushing legislation to make his disastrous Project 2025 plans a reality. Between naming unqualified billionaire Linda McMahon Education Secretary and launching dangerous broadsides against education funding on the campaign trail, Trump has made crystal clear he\u2019ll put our public schools at risk on day one. No matter what shameless attacks Trump and his MAGA enablers lob at students and teachers, Democrats will always fight back to protect public education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udea8 <\/strong>NEW: Trump lackey Senator Mike Rounds introduced a bill to abolish the Department of Education, and is \u201cpleased\u201d and \u201cexcited\u201d to work with Donald Trump to pass it. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fox News<\/a>: \u201cSen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., debuted the \u2018Returning Education to Our States Act\u2019 in the Senate, which would abolish the Education Department <\/strong>and charge various other departments with certain responsibilities and programs that are currently administered by it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018For years, I\u2019ve worked toward removing the federal Department of Education. I\u2019m pleased that President-elect Trump shares this vision, and I\u2019m excited to work with him <\/strong>and Republican majorities in the Senate and House to make this a reality. This legislation is a roadmap to eliminating the federal Department of Education by practically rehoming these federal programs in the departments where they belong, which will be critical as we move into next year,\u2019 [Rounds] continued.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump and JD Vance have repeatedly promised to carry out Project 2025\u2019s extreme plan to eliminate the Department of Education. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN<\/a>: \u201cTrump wants to close the Department of Education<\/strong>, joining calls by GOP rivals\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Associated Press<\/a>: \u201cTrump has pledged to terminate the Department of Education, but he also wants to exert enormous influence over local school districts and colleges.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance<\/a>: \u201cI\u2019ve reviewed a lot of [Project 2025]. There are some good ideas in there.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Week<\/a>: \u201cMany of Trump\u2019s indicated plans for a second term fall in line with the Project 2025 outline.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Axios<\/a>: \u201cThis is undeniably a Trump-driven operation.<\/strong> The biggest tell: Johnny McEntee \u2014 one of Trump’s closest White House aides, and his most fervent internal loyalty enforcer \u2014 is a senior adviser to Project 2025. One of the most powerful architects is Stephen Miller, a top West Wing adviser for the Trump administration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN<\/a>: \u201cTrump claims not to know who is behind Project 2025. A CNN review found at least 140 people who worked for him are involved\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project 2025, p. 319<\/a>: \u201cFederal education policy should be limited and, ultimately, the federal Department of Education should be eliminated. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUltimately, every parent should have the option to direct his or her child\u2019s share of education funding through an education savings account (ESA), funded overwhelmingly by state and local taxpayers.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project 2025, p. 331<\/a>: \u201cThe new Administration must take immediate steps to rescind the new requirements and lessen the federal restrictions on charter schools.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project 2025, p. 350<\/a>: \u201cTitle I is the largest portion of federal taxpayer spending under this federal education law, and the section provides additional taxpayer resources to schools or groups of schools in lower income areas. \u2026 Over a 10-year period, the federal spending should be phased out and states should assume decision-making control over how to provide a quality education to children from low-income families.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project 2025, p. 332<\/a>: \u201c… the current Administration has drastically expanded BDR, CSLD, and PSLF loan forgiveness \u2026 The new Administration must quickly commence negotiated rulemaking and propose that the department rescind these regulations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump\u2019s promise to abolish the Department of Education is consistent with his long history of attacking funding for the department and for critical programs during his first term. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NPR<\/a>: \u201cPresident Trump\u2019s Budget Proposal Calls For Deep Cuts To Education.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside Higher Education<\/a>: \u201cPresident Trump called for a $7.1 billion cut to funding at the Education Department with a proposed budget that retreads familiar higher education ideas for this White House. \u2026 The proposal marks the third straight year that President Trump has asked Congress for major cuts to education spending<\/strong> \u2014 the proposal would mean a 12 percent cut for the Education Department from fiscal year 2019 \u2014 and to overall discretionary expenditures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Center for American Progress<\/a>: \u201cTrump\u2019s proposal also means that over 490,000 teacher positions could be eliminated\u201414 percent of K-12 public school teachers nationwide. This would have a terrible effect on the U.S. economy.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

K-12 Dive<\/a>: \u201cPresident Donald Trump announced his proposed 2021 fiscal year budget Monday afternoon, once more suggesting cuts to the Department of Education and its notable K-12 programs.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOverall, the budget allocates $66.6 billion for the Department of Education, 7.8% or $5.6 billion less than the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAmong proposed changes is a push to restructure the Elementary and Secondary Education Act into a block grant of $19.4 billion, which would consolidate major programs into its fold, including the Every Student Succeeds Act\u2019s Title I and Title II, and amount to $4.8 billion less than what Congress approved for 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cThe proposal would cut $3.6 billion <\/strong>\u2014 about 5 percent \u2014 from the Education Department by eliminating several discretionary programs, including one that funds after-school activities for needy children and another that covers teacher training.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
