In response to Mike Johnson doubling down on the Trump-Vance plan to <\/em>defund<\/em><\/a> Planned Parenthood, <\/em>DNC Spokesperson Aida Ross<\/em><\/strong> <\/em>released the following statement:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnti-choice extremist Mike Johnson just confirmed the GOP is \u2018preparing the playbook\u2019 for Donald Trump to enact his extreme Project 2025 agenda to defund Planned Parenthood and rip away our basic rights. From primary care and cancer screenings to contraceptive services, Planned Parenthood provides millions of Americans with access to health care. But Trump\u2019s MAGA GOP doesn\u2019t care about protecting Americans\u2019 health \u2014 just ripping away reproductive freedoms as women continue to die preventable deaths under abortion bans Trump made possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udea8 BREAKING: Donald Trump\u2019s MAGA minion Mike Johnson said he would defund reproductive health care services if given the chance, which is wildly <\/strong>unpopular<\/strong><\/a> with the American people.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

MacCallum<\/a>: \u201cTwo specific examples, Planned Parenthood and PBS <\/strong>are in congressional control, are you planning to axe both of those?<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johnson: \u201cI would like to<\/strong>, that\u2019s for sure-\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

MacCallum: \u201c-spending for both of those?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johnson: \u201cYeah, we got to build consensus to have the votes to do that. Now, some of this will be done by executive order out of the White House<\/strong>-\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

MacCallum: \u201cAbsolutely.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johnson: \u201c-[Trump] has the broad authority to do a lot of that. <\/strong>But where Congress is involved, that\u2019s where it takes the hard work of legislating and getting everybody on the same page. So there will be lots of ideas that come out, we did not want to put too many of it out right now, ok. But this is part of that preparing the playbook to unleash and unroll in January<\/strong>.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearly 8 in 10 Americans support Planned Parenthood, which provides millions of Americans with health care every year \u2014 including primary care, contraceptive services, and cancer screenings.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Planned Parenthood<\/a>: \u201cMore than three-fourths of Americans (77%) have a favorable view of Planned Parenthood,<\/strong> with the strongest support among women, adults under 35, and Black, Latino, and AAPI communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politico<\/a>: \u201cPlanned Parenthood serves about 1.6 million of the roughly 4 million low-income women who depend on Title X clinics for free and subsidized care.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johnson has a long record of attacking reproductive health care, including co-sponsoring<\/strong> <\/em><\/strong>the Life at Conception Act, which would ban abortion nationwide and include no protections for IVF access.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Business Insider<\/a>: \u201cMost House Republicans have cosponsored a bill declaring that life begins from the moment of conception, a position under increased scrutiny after the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos are \u2018unborn children.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis Congress, 125 House Republicans \u2014 including Speaker Mike Johnson \u2014 have cosponsored the \u2018Life at Conception Act,\u2019<\/strong> which states that the term \u2018human being\u2019 includes \u2018all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization, cloning, or other moment at which an individual member of the human species comes into being.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe bill does not include any exception for in vitro fertilization (IVF), a reproductive treatment that allows mothers to fertilize several eggs outside the womb in order to increase the chances of a viable pregnancy.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Punchbowl News<\/a>: \u201cJohnson doesn\u2019t back exceptions for abortion:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018I\u2019ve never supported exemptions. It\u2019s a matter of conscience to me. But [Trump] was very clear. He qualified those statements, as well. And he said everybody has to express your own conscience \u2026 It\u2019s a difficult issue in a lot of districts and everybody needs to go and address it \u2026 in an appropriate way. And so far, everybody is.\u2019\u201d

Jezebel<\/a>: \u201c[Johnson] expressed hope that Roe v. Wade would someday be overturned, railed against people supposedly \u2018using abortion as birth control\u2019 and appeared to blame school shootings on abortion: \u2018When you break up the nuclear family, when you tell a generation of people that life has no value, no meaning, that it\u2019s expendable, then you do wind up with school shooters.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donald Trump and JD Vance\u2019s Project 2025 agenda would defund Planned Parenthood \u2014 something Vance himself confirmed on the campaign trail.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vance<\/a>: \u201cOn the question of defunding Planned Parenthood \u2026 our view is we don’t think that taxpayers should fund late term abortions. That has been a consistent view of the Trump campaign the first time around, it will remain a consistent view.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project 2025, page 471<\/a>: \u201cProhibit Planned Parenthood from receiving Medicaid funds \u2026 Policymakers should end taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project 2025, page 472<\/a>: \u201cHHS should \u2026 1) Issue guidance reemphasizing that states are free to defund Planned Parenthood in their state Medicaid plans. <\/strong>2) Propose rulemaking to interpret the Medicaid statute to disqualify providers of elective abortion from the Medicaid program. Congress should pass the Protecting Life and Taxpayers Act, which would accomplish the goal of defunding abortion providers such as Planned Parenthood.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project 2025, page 491<\/a>: \u201cCongress should complement these efforts by passing legislation such as the Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act,78 which would prohibit family planning grants from going to entities that perform abortions or provide funding to other entities that perform abortions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During Trump\u2019s first term, his administration\u2019s \u201cgag rule\u201d defunded hundreds of Title X clinics, disqualifying providers like Planned Parenthood from providing care under the program.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guttmacher Institute<\/a>: \u201c[T]he Trump administration\u2019s domestic \u2018gag rule\u2019 has slashed the Title X national family planning network\u2019s patient capacity in half, jeopardizing care for 1.6 million female patients nationwide \u2026<\/strong> roughly one in every four Title X service sites left the network in 2019 because of the domestic gag rule, shorthand for restrictive regulations that prohibit\u2014among other things\u2014referrals for abortion care. In 2019, an estimated 981 U.S. clinics receiving Title X funding\u2014approximately one-quarter of all sites that received Title X funding as of June 2019\u2014likely left the Title X network because of the gag rule.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

KFF<\/a>: \u201cWhile in office, Trump\u2019s Administration rewrote the rules governing the federal Title X program, the federal family planning program that supports contraceptive access for people with lower incomes.
