Republicans in Washington say they plan to use funding cuts and regulatory changes to dramatically shrink Medicaid, the nearly $900-billion-a-year government health insurance program that, along with the related Children\u2019s Health Insurance Program, serves about 79 million mostly low-income or disabled Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kffhealthnews.org\/news\/article\/trump-republicans-gop-medicaid-expansion-aca-obamacare-matching\/\"><strong>KFF Health News<\/strong><\/a><strong>: Trump\u2019s Return Puts Medicaid on the Chopping Block<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By Phil Galewitz<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Under President Joe Biden, enrollment in Medicaid hit a record high and the uninsured rate reached a record low.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Donald Trump\u2019s return to the White House \u2014 along with a GOP-controlled Senate and House of Representatives \u2014 is expected to change that.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Republicans in Washington say they plan to use funding cuts and regulatory changes to dramatically shrink Medicaid, the nearly $900-billion-a-year government health insurance program that, along with the related Children\u2019s Health Insurance Program, serves about 79 million mostly low-income or disabled Americans.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>proposals include rolling back the Affordable Care Act\u2019s expansion of Medicaid, which<\/strong> over the last 11 years <strong>added about 20 million low-income adults to its rolls.<\/strong> Trump has said he wants to drastically cut government spending, which may be necessary for Republicans to extend 2017 tax cuts that expire at the end of this year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advocates for poor people fear GOP funding <strong>cuts will leave more Americans without insurance<\/strong>, making it harder for them to get care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The GOP is looking at several tactics to reduce the size of Medicaid: Shifting to block grants &#8230; Cutting ACA Medicaid funding &#8230; Lowering federal matching funds &#8230; Adding work requirements &#8230; Placing enrollment hurdles.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the GOP\u2019s plans to shrink Medicaid are realized, Democrats and <strong>health experts say, low-income people forced to buy private insurance would face challenges paying monthly premiums<\/strong> and the large copayments and deductibles common to commercial plans that typically don\u2019t exist in Medicaid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Key Point: \u201cUnder President Joe Biden, enrollment in Medicaid hit a record high and the uninsured rate reached a record low.
