DNC filed its opposition to Republicans\u2019 meritless appeal with the North Carolina Supreme Court on Tuesday and also joined the federal court fight to ensure North Carolina voters have their voices heard<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the DNC filed its opposition brief with the North Carolina Supreme Court to block the Republican Party\u2019s attempt to overthrow an election decided more than three months ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In January, the Republican National Committee, North Carolina Republican Party, and Wake County Republican Party asked the North Carolina Superior Court to segregate and throw out more than 60,000 ballots cast by North Carolina voters in all state elections. After the DNC intervened, their request was denied. Now, in an unprecedented move, Republicans are attempting to bypass the North Carolina Court of Appeals and appeal directly to the Republican-led North Carolina Supreme Court, asking them to throw out these votes, without a shred of evidence that any of these votes were unlawful. The DNC is fighting to protect the rights of North Carolina voters and ensure that they, not right-wing courts, get to decide who their elected officials are. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, today, the DNC also joined the federal court battle to protect these voters from Republicans\u2019 meritless attacks by intervening and filing a brief supporting the North Carolina State Board of Elections\u2019s position that federal courts retain jurisdiction to protect the rights of the voters at issue in this case. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two things are certain: The DNC will fight like hell to protect the rights of North Carolina voters and it is time for Jefferson Griffin and the Republican Party to accept the will of the people and concede. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin issued the following statement:

<\/strong>\u201cFor months, North Carolina Republicans have attempted to steal an election in plain sight, seeking to throw away some 60,000 lawful votes cast in the race for North Carolina Supreme Court justice \u2013 and now they are trying to do the same in all other state races as well. Today, the Democratic National Committee is fighting to ensure that voters get to decide the outcome of their elections, not right-wing courts. While Republicans attempt to suppress the votes of their constituents, the DNC is fighting everywhere \u2013 in both state courts and federal \u2013 to protect the will of North Carolina voters and the sanctity of North Carolina elections.\u201d

Democratic National Committee Vice Chair for Civic Engagement Reyna Walters Morgan issues the following statement:<\/strong>

\u201cAs a North Carolinian, I am appalled by the attempts of the Republican Party to overthrow a free and fair election won by Allison Riggs, and to attack the results in countless races that were certified months ago. What\u2019s happening in North Carolina could happen anywhere and the DNC is fighting to ensure that the voices of my friends, family, and neighbors are heard. There are no days off when it comes to protecting our democracy. The DNC will never stop working on behalf of North Carolinians at home and our active duty military abroad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
