As Trump\u2019s \u201cunpredictable\u201d<\/a> economic policies \u201cbegin to bite,\u201d<\/a> <\/strong>unemployment<\/a> is rising<\/a>, consumer confidence is plummeting<\/a>, and Americans are bracing<\/a> for a \u201cserious Trump recession.\u201d <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s a look at widespread concerns after Trump refused to rule out a recession twice: <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York Times<\/a>: \u201cTrump Declines to Rule Out Recession as Tariffs Begin to Bite\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPresident Trump declined in an interview aired Sunday to rule out the possibility that his economic policies, <\/strong>including aggressive tariffs against America\u2019s trade partners, would cause a recession.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN<\/a>: \u201cUS stocks opened sharply lower Monday after President Donald Trump said the US economy would see \u2018a period of transition\u2019 and refused to rule out a recession, in an interview that aired Sunday. \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cStocks have been hammered so far this month amid uncertainty around Trump\u2019s on-again, off-again tariff policy. The S&P 500 slid 3.1% last week, posting its worst week since September.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wall Street Journal<\/strong><\/a>: \u201cTrump Declines to Rule Out Recession\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are some early signs of strain, with a drop in consumer spending and fears about inflation weighing on businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLater Sunday, Trump defended his tariff policy, telling reporters that the levies \u2018are going to be the greatest thing we\u2019ve ever done as a country.\u2019 A reporter said he hesitated in the Fox News interview when he was asked about a recession. \u2018Of course you hesitate,\u2019 Trump said. \u2018Who knows?\u2019 \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTreasury Secretary Scott Bessent last week also said that the U.S. economy could be in for a rough patch during this economic transition. \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTrump has in recent days acknowledged the choppiness tariffs have brought. \u2018There could be some disturbance, a little bit of disturbance,\u2019 he said Friday.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Financial Times<\/a>: \u201cUS stocks fell on Monday,<\/strong> deepening the recent sell-off triggered by investor concerns over the impact of President Trump\u2019s policies on the American economy. \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018Global growth and trade are under threat,\u2019<\/strong> said Paul Donovan, chief economist at UBS Global Wealth Management, adding that Trump\u2019s policy on tariffs has been \u2018unpredictable.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bloomberg<\/a>: \u201cUS gauges are showing their highest levels of credit risk<\/strong> this year Monday morning, as investors exhibit fresh concern about the state of the country\u2019s economy in light of tariffs and cuts to the federal workforce.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Conference Board<\/a>: \u201c\u2018The [Employment Trends Index] fell in February to its lowest level since October,\u2019<\/strong> said Mitchell Barnes, Economist at The Conference Board. \u2018Growing policy uncertainty is beginning to weigh on business and consumer sentiment, with more substantial impacts from federal layoffs and funding disruptions expected in the months ahead.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe share of consumers who report \u2018jobs are hard to get\u2019\u2014an ETI component from the Consumer Confidence Survey\u00ae\u2014rose 1.8 percentage points in February<\/strong>. The share of small firms that report jobs are \u2018not able to be filled right now\u2019 rose from 35% to 38%, its largest monthly increase in nearly a year.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
