In response to Senate Republicans advancing Dr. Mehmet Oz out of committee to be the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administrator, <\/em>DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToday, Senate Republicans made it clear they support Donald Trump and Dr. Oz\u2019s overwhelmingly unpopular<\/a> plans to gut Medicare and Medicaid. Together, these two scam artists will try to rip away health care from seniors, children, and folks in rural America and raise costs on working families just to pay for another <\/em>tax handout for Trump\u2019s billionaire backers. The American people are already pushing back on Trump\u2019s devastating cuts \u2014 they won\u2019t stand for another one of Trump\u2019s unfit and unqualified TV personalities who will make life more expensive.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NEW: After Dr. Mehmet Oz bombed his Senate confirmation hearing and doubled down on his plans to help Donald Trump gut Medicare and Medicaid, Senate Republicans voted to advance his nomination as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administrator. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bloomberg News<\/a>: \u201cThe Senate Finance Committee advanced Oz\u2019s nomination<\/strong> Tuesday with a 14-13<\/strong> vote\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sen. Ron Wyden<\/a>: \u201cWill you agree \u2026 to oppose any cuts to the Medicaid program?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Mehmet Oz: *Dodges*<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sen. Wyden: \u201cThat\u2019s not the question, doctor. The question is, will you oppose cuts to this program?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Oz: *Dodges again*<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sen. Wyden: \u201cLet the record show that I asked a witness who said he cherishes this program, will you agree to oppose cuts? And he would not answer a yes or no question.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Garrett Haake<\/a>: <\/strong>\u201cBuried in Oz announcement is this line which suggests cuts to Medicare may be on the table<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018He will also cut waste and fraud within our Country\u2019s most expensive Government Agency, which is a third of our Nation\u2019s Healthcare spend, and a quarter of our entire National Budget.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Oz has said he would not have voted for the Affordable Care Act and has a long history of promoting private insurance plans. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blavity<\/a>: <\/strong>\u201c[Oz] explained his belief that \u2018health\u2019 is only a right for those who can afford insurance. \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018Give them a way of crawling back out of the abyss, of darkness, of fear, over not having the health they need, and give them an opportunity,\u2019 he said in the clip. \u2018They don\u2019t have the right to health<\/strong>, but they have a right to access \u2014 a chance to get that health.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lever<\/a>: \u201c[Dr. Oz\u2019s] program could move seniors and most Americans into private insurance plans that have been raising premiums and denying roughly one in ten medical claims,<\/strong> according to a recent government report finding that the plans frequently refuse to cover services required by Medicare.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NOTUS<\/a>: \u201cCelebrity doctor Mehmet Oz \u2026 called for the ACA to be replaced with privately run Medicare Advantage plans for which he was once a paid spokesperson. \u2026 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018I wouldn\u2019t have voted for it,<\/strong>\u2019 Oz tweeted in May.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York Times<\/a>: \u201cDr. Mehmet Oz<\/strong>, the celebrity TV doctor nominated by President Trump to oversee Medicare and Medicaid, has been a relentless promoter of controversial private insurance plans for older Americans.<\/strong>\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Oz has a history of attacking Americans\u2019 reproductive freedoms, raising fears he will rip away emergency, life-saving health care from women across the country. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rolling Stone<\/a>: \u201cTrump\u2019s selection of Oz \u2014 who has called abortion \u2018murder,\u2019 asserted that life begins at conception, and said that reproductive decisions should be between \u2018women, doctors, [and] local political leaders\u2019<\/strong> \u2014 to lead the agency has caused alarm for some \u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAmong the senators\u2019 questions are whether Oz would implement recommendations from Project 2025<\/strong>, the Heritage Foundation\u2019s policy blueprint for Trump\u2019s second term, including directives to limit EMTALA\u2019s protections <\/strong>\u2026 and whether he would, as Project 2025 recommends, exclude Planned Parenthood from state Medicaid funds.<\/strong>\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Oz\u2019s conflicts of interests would put Americans\u2019 hard-earned benefits at risk.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cHealth benefits company co-founded by Dr. Oz could be a conflict of interest\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMehmet Oz \u2026 co-founded health benefits company ZorroRX<\/strong> with his son last year, according to now-hidden source code and a blog post on the company\u2019s website. \u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEthics experts, lawyers and health care analysts say his ties to a health benefits company that could profit off the federal drug program entangle him in a potential conflict of interest.<\/strong> \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOz did not disclose his involvement with ZorroRX<\/strong> in his financial forms submitted to the Office of Government Ethics.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York Times<\/a>: \u201cDr. Oz: How His Millions Collide With Medicare\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAn examination by The Times of his myriad financial interests revealed not only opaque ties with the industries he may soon regulate but also a coziness with health care companies that lawmakers have already highlighted in questioning his independence.<\/strong> \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn 2023, he joined iHerb, an online seller of vitamins and supplements, as an adviser and spokesman. In the new financial filing, his investments in iHerb represent one of his largest financial holdings<\/strong>, worth anywhere from $5 million to $25 million. \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUnder the private Medicare plans, customers are allowed to buy over-the-counter medicines and supplements through debit or prepaid cards, another potential conflict for Dr. Oz because of his history with iHerb and other supplement companies.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

REMINDER: Since Day One, Trump has launched attacks on Medicare and efforts to lower drug prices for working families while putting Medicaid on the chopping block to pay for another round of tax handouts for billionaires. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
