Ahead of Mother\u2019s Day, Donald Trump is making life harder for mothers across the country \u2014 from slashing life-saving <\/em>maternal health care<\/em><\/a> to forcing new moms to <\/em>\u201cpanic-buy\u201d<\/em><\/a> essentials that keep their babies safe and healthy. Just last week, the Trump administration even began <\/em>dismantling<\/em><\/a> the federal agency responsible for keeping unsafe toys, cribs, and other essentials out of Americans\u2019 homes. Families are bracing for empty shelves in the childcare section, as they already face skyrocketing grocery bills, and higher costs across the board \u2014 and they know Trump is to blame. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donald Trump and his MAGA cronies slashed maternal health care and fertility programs that millions of families rely on. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN:<\/a> <\/strong>\u201cWhether it\u2019s new mothers\u2019 postpartum survival, HIV prevention in LGBTQ populations or higher risk of aggressive breast cancer in Black women, many studies necessitate a focus on the people most affected, those experts say. The NIH cut research in all those areas. \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn 2023, the NIH launched a $168 million initiative across 10 universities to improve maternal health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn March, the agency canceled funding to two of them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politico<\/a>: \u201cClinics begin closing as Trump admin continues freeze on family planning funds\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cFertility and maternal health programs slashed, alarming experts\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cExperts say the fallout will hit patients directly: Couples trying to conceive could lose access to information about clinics, treatments and their chances of success.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to Trump\u2019s chaotic and expensive agenda, new mothers are forced to \u201cpanic buy\u201d baby necessities as supply shortages loom. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cTrump\u2019s tariffs hit baby industry hard, threatening parents with price hikes, shortages\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTariffs on Chinese goods are making it more expensive to raise children in the United States, driving up prices and threatening shortages of critical baby gear at a time when household budgets are already under strain. \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut with new tariffs more than doubling the cost of Chinese imports, prices on baby necessities are rising fast. And manufacturers and retailers are suddenly slamming on the brakes, halting months\u2019 worth of shipments, a move that economists warn will lead to shortages of strollers, cribs and other necessities as early as this month.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018Baby products are not only critical, they\u2019re required by law in many cases, like car seats,\u2019<\/strong> said Lisa Trofe, executive director of the [Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association], which is expecting overall markups of about 30 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut tariffs \u2013 ranging from 10% for imports from most countries to 145% for imports from China — will make it many times more expensive for new parents. \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cElizabeth Mahon, the owner of Three Littles, a baby store in Washington, said she\u2019s worried the tariffs will make essential products too expensive for some families.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Trump administration also began dismantling the independent federal agency responsible for protecting children from unsafe toys, strollers, and other everyday products. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NPR<\/a>: \u201cThe Democratic members of an independent agency dedicated to protecting Americans from dangerous products and issuing recalls and safety warnings were fired by President Trump via an overnight email.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington Post<\/a>: \u201cThe CPSC regulates the safety of everyday consumer products, such as strollers, toasters and bicycles. <\/strong>It enforces safety standards and coordinates product safety recalls, such as banning dangerous phthalate chemicals from plastic children\u2019s toys and pushing companies to recall furniture that tips, creating a crushing hazard for children, or jogging strollers at risk of falling apart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
