In response to the Trump administration flip-flopping on their tariffs deadline, <\/em>DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDonald Trump and his clown car Cabinet can\u2019t get their story straight. Week after week, this administration has made it clear they have zero clue what they are doing. American consumers and businesses are already struggling under Trump\u2019s unaffordable agenda, and they deserve better than a chaotic and reckless trade war that changes hour to hour based on Trump\u2019s mood. \u201890 deals in 90 days\u2019 has turned into just another broken promise to the American people.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump\u2019s latest trade \u201cdeal\u201d is nothing more than a preliminary framework that will tax US consumers more while European consumers pay less \u2014 just like Trump\u2019s other so-called \u201cdeals\u201d. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

BBC<\/a>: \u201cUS consumers – loser \u2026 Ordinary Americans are already aggrieved at the increased cost of living and this deal could add to the burden by hiking prices on EU goods.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politico<\/a>: \u201cEU admits it can\u2019t guarantee $600B promise to Trump\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe European Union has admitted it doesn\u2019t have the power to deliver on a promise to invest $600 billion in the United States economy<\/strong>, only hours after making the pledge at landmark trade talks in Scotland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s because the cash would come entirely from private sector investment over which Brussels has no authority<\/strong>, two EU officials said.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Justin Wolfers, University of Michigan<\/a>: \u201cAmerican President raises taxes on Americans across a wide range of goods<\/strong>; European Union President announces tax cuts for Europeans across a narrow range of goods.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN<\/a>: \u201cPresident Donald Trump announced Sunday that the United States and the European Union reached a framework<\/strong> for a trade deal, ending a monthslong saga with America\u2019s largest trading partner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Associated Press<\/a>: \u201cWhat Trump described as a \u2018deal\u2019 is actually less than that: It\u2019s a \u2018framework\u2019 meant to set the stage for more substantive talks.\u201d  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bloomberg<\/a>: \u201cTrump\u2019s Preliminary \u2018Napkin\u2019 Deals on Trade Face Scrutiny<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday, it was reported that Donald Trump plans to delay the deadline for tariffs on China for an additional 90 days.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

South China Morning Post<\/a>: \u201cBeijing and Washington are expected to extend their tariff truce by another three months<\/strong> at trade talks in Stockholm beginning on Monday, according to sources close to the matter on both sides.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Howard Lutnick is doubling down on Donald Trump\u2019s August 1st tariff deadline \u2014 just five days away.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Howard Lutnick<\/a>: \u201c[S]o no extensions, no more grace periods. August 1st, the tariffs are set. <\/strong>They\u2019ll go into place. Customs will start collecting the money, and off we go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same flip-flop happened last week \u2014 Lutnick called Aug. 1 a \u201chard deadline\u201d as Scott Bessent downplayed the August 1 tariffs deadline.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joe Kernan<\/a>: \u201cBut, Mr. Secretary, August 1st is a week from a week from Friday, I think, and I think that\u2019s on everyone\u2019s mind. Any progress that you can report on some of our big trading partners?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scott Bessent: \u201cLook, Joe, talks are moving along \u2026 And we are more concerned with high quality deals than getting these deals done by August 1st.<\/strong> \u2026 [W]e\u2019re not going to rush<\/strong> for the sake of doing deals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Margaret Brennan<\/a>: \u201cAugust 1, is it a hard deadline with the E.U. or is that going to slide?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Howard Lutnick: \u201cNo, no. That\u2019s a hard deadline.<\/strong> So, on August 1, the new tariff rates will come in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donald Trump<\/a>: \u201cAs per letters sent to various countries yesterday, in addition to letters that will be sent today, tomorrow, and for the next short period of time, TARIFFS WILL START BEING PAID ON AUGUST 1, 2025. <\/strong>There has been no change to this date, and there will be no change. In other words, all money will be due and payable starting AUGUST 1, 2025 – No extensions will be granted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PROMISES MADE, PROMISES BROKEN: The Trump administration failed \u2014 massively \u2014 on its promise of 90 deals in 90 days.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reporter<\/a>: \u201cAugust 1st you\u2019ve said is the deadline. What incentives do countries have to negotiate? It seems that deadline keeps moving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donald Trump: \u201cNo, it\u2019s always been August 1st. \u2026 I didn\u2019t make a change.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Garrett Haake, NBC News<\/a>: \u201cPresident Trump just denied changing the date for tariff deadline to August 1, saying in cabinet meeting that was always the date. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c<\/strong>Here\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> the EO he signed yesterday moving the deadline from July 9 to August 1.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politico<\/a>: \u201cFor all his optimistic talk on trade, Trump has made little tangible progress since this spring\u2019s tariff spree, so far only securing frameworks of agreements with the U.K. and China and leaving American businesses grappling with continued economic uncertainty.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
