{"id":1055452,"date":"2025-08-01T16:59:28","date_gmt":"2025-08-01T20:59:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/democrats.org\/?p=1055452"},"modified":"2025-08-01T16:59:29","modified_gmt":"2025-08-01T20:59:29","slug":"six-months-in-democrats-are-building-for-the-long-term","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/democrats.org\/news\/six-months-in-democrats-are-building-for-the-long-term\/","title":{"rendered":"Six Months In, Democrats Are Building for the Long-Term"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>MEMORANDUM<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TO:<\/strong> Interested Parties<br><strong>FROM:<\/strong> Ken Martin, DNC Chair\u00a0<br><strong>DATE: <\/strong>August 1, 2025<br><strong>RE:<\/strong> Six Months In, Democrats Are Building for the Long-Term<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>A little over six months ago, when I campaigned to lead the Democratic National Committee, I ran on a vision of transforming the DNC into an organization that not only operates in permanent campaign mode, but in generational campaign mode. What does that mean?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It means a DNC that looks ten years into the future, winning back and bringing in new voters, rebuilding and earning trust, and anticipating technological and information environment advances to ensure our state parties and candidates have the latest tools to help them win.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it means a DNC that truly listens to the tens of millions of people in this country who make the Democratic Party the most effective political arm of the working class in American history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an organization, our job is to win elections, including this year in places like Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and in next year&#8217;s midterms. But we must also invest now in the critical elements of organizing and map expansion that are necessary to win elections in three years, seven years, and 11 years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After six months on the job, here\u2019s what we\u2019ve done and the path forward.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Building to Win<br><br>The best barometer of how voters feel is how they vote. Resoundingly, elections so far in 2025 show voters are fed up with Donald Trump and already looking for change. The DNC is answering voters\u2019 demands:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Democratic momentum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/05\/politics\/democrats-overperform-gop-challenges\">continues to build<\/a>: Out of 35 major elections this year, Democrats have won or overperformed in 34.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2025, Democrats secured victory or <strong>overperformed in 25 state legislative elections<\/strong>, of which 11 were in red states.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Democrat James Malone claimed an <a href=\"https:\/\/lancasteronline.com\/news\/politics\/elon-musk-scott-presler-sound-alarm-over-republican-josh-parsons-chances-in-tuesday-s-state\/article_1ff583fc-b55e-4584-a72e-a5a61b037a69.html\">upset victory<\/a> in an R+23 state Senate district in Lancaster County, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/mar\/26\/james-malone-democrat-pennsylvania-state-senate\">crediting<\/a> voters\u2019 anger at Trump\u2019s chaos as a major factor in his win \u2014 that district hasn\u2019t had a Democrat representing it since <a href=\"https:\/\/lancasteronline.com\/news\/politics\/democrat-james-malone-narrowly-edges-republican-josh-parsons-in-36th-senate-race-some-votes-still\/article_92d8d2e9-6953-42ba-b766-2828701ea781.html\">1979<\/a>, and a Democratic president hadn\u2019t won Lancaster County since Lyndon B. Johnson won it in <a href=\"https:\/\/lancasteronline.com\/from_our_archives\/nov-4-1964-lancaster-county-goes-for-johnson\/article_e11b3a23-9e9a-513d-a84d-d9d2768cfbf5.html\">1964<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Democrats also sealed a Democratic majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court to protect abortion access and dismantle corporate greed.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To defend North Carolina voters, the DNC provided legal, communications, and organizational support to the North Carolina Democratic Party and State Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs as Riggs\u2019 disgraced Republican opponent refused to concede for nearly six months.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In March, the DNC launched voter contact campaigns in <strong>Wisconsin and Florida. <\/strong>In Wisconsin, our efforts resulted in <strong>some 72,000 calls to voters<\/strong> in support of Judge Susan Crawford and down-ballot candidates. In Florida, we attempted over <strong>50,000<\/strong> voter contacts in special election congressional districts.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The DNC\u2019s GOTV efforts also supported the election of Omaha, Nebraska\u2019s first <strong>Democratic mayor since 2009,<\/strong> ousting the longest-serving Republican Mayor in the country. Mayor John Ewing Jr. won by over 12 points.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In early June, the DNC supported the Texas Democratic Party and Gina Ortiz Jones\u2019 historic win in San Antonio\u2019s mayoral race, making <strong>40,000 voter contact attempts<\/strong> and recruiting volunteers in the San Antonio area to canvas during the final days of the race.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In July, the DNC launched our ongoing campaign against Trump and Republicans\u2019 gerrymandering scheme in Texas, sending over <strong>250,000 texts to voters in Austin, Houston, and Dallas-Fort Worth<\/strong> to empower them to speak out against voter disenfranchisement at field hearings happening in each city.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The DNC has marshaled <strong>30,000 volunteers to reach persuadable Republican voters<\/strong> in key Texas House districts to let them know that House Republicans are playing games with their votes instead of focusing on relief for flood victims.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Organizing Everywhere<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Historic Investments<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the DNC isn\u2019t just showing up for the elections and fights around the corner.<strong> <\/strong>Under my leadership, <strong>the DNC is making historic investments in all our states and territories for the long term. <\/strong>In April, the DNC and ASDC launched the \u201corganize everywhere, win anywhere\u201d strategy \u2014 a new four-year agreement to deliver more resources into Democratic state and territory parties than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Under the new State Partnership Program (SPP) agreement, each state party will receive a baseline of $17,500 a month, a $5,000 per month increase over the last agreement, and Republican-controlled states will receive an additional investment of $5,000 a month through the DNC\u2019s Red State Fund, putting their total at $22,500 every month.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The combined investments total a monthly transfer of more than <strong>$1 million from the DNC to state parties <\/strong>every single month<strong> <\/strong>\u2014 the committee\u2019s largest investment into Democratic state parties in history.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The DNC is all hands on deck ahead of upcoming gubernatorial and down-ballot races in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2025\/07\/15\/virginia-dnc-elections-trump-governor\/\">Virginia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/politics\/2025\/06\/top-democrat-says-nj-is-key-to-stopping-trump.html\">New Jersey<\/a> later this year. In Virginia, the DNC announced an initial investment of more than $1.5 million \u2014 one of the largest and earliest investments the DNC has ever made to the Virginia Democratic Coordinated Campaign in an off-year election cycle.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The DNC\u2019s People\u2019s Town Halls&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to Republicans\u2019 refusal to meet face to face with their constituents after plotting to rip away health care access and food assistance, the DNC, DCCC and ASDC launched the \u201cPeople\u2019s Town Halls\u201d to engage with voters left behind by their Republican representatives.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Since the launch of our \u201cPeople\u2019s Town Halls,\u201d the DNC and state parties have <strong>hosted over 140 town halls across all 50 states<\/strong>, mobilizing thousands of voters and volunteers.<strong><br><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These town halls have included participation from: Senators Mark Kelly, Cory Booker, Elizabeth Warren, Ruben Gallego, and Chris Murphy; Representatives Maxwell Frost, Yassamin Ansari, Jamie Raskin, Madeleine Dean and Greg Casar; among many other elected officials and local leaders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Organizing Summer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Republicans passed their billionaire-first budget, the DNC built an avenue to transform voters\u2019 anger into grassroots energy through <strong>Organizing Summer<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The DNC is<strong> <\/strong>investing in the long-term organizing we\u2019ll need to kick vulnerable Republicans out of office and take back the House and Senate in 2026. Through <strong>Organizing Summer<\/strong>, we\u2019re <strong>expanding volunteer leadership, keeping the pressure on Republicans, <\/strong>and<strong> turbocharging voter engagement.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>During the first week of Organizing Summer, the top age group of supporters getting involved was ages 18-24, for the first time ever.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In partnership with state parties and volunteer event hosts, the DNC has already hosted<strong> over 65 organizing events across the country this summer<\/strong>, including town halls, voter engagement trainings, rallies outside GOP offices, canvasses and more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To meet the moment, we\u2019re training supporters as messengers in the in-person <em>and<\/em> online spaces they already engage in: book clubs, Reddit threads, sports forums, Discord servers for their favorite video games.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Already, the DNC has exceeded<strong> 30,000 volunteer sign-ups and engagements<\/strong> in the past six months \u2014 the largest volunteer base the DNC has ever had at this point in the cycle.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Supporting the Next Generation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To prepare the leaders of today and tomorrow, the DNC launched a <strong>national training program<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The DNC\u2019s National Training Team works across organizations in the Democratic ecosystem, hosting multi-day intensive bootcamps to sharpen the skills of new and existing operatives, offer on-demand training opportunities for local community leaders \u2014 including hundreds of Democratic municipal officials \u2014 and provide management and leadership coaching programs in key states.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Winning the Narrative<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The DNC War Room<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The DNC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/democrats.org\/news\/dnc-announces-new-war-room-operation-to-take-on-trump-administration\/\">new War Room<\/a> expands and streamlines the DNC\u2019s communications, research, and mobilization operations, using a \u201cwalls down\u201d approach to aggressively lead rapid response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The War Room incorporates four main pillars:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Expanding<\/strong> Democrats\u2019 reach into new information spaces;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Modernizing<\/strong> the rapid response operation to drive aggressive daily messaging to counter the Trump administration;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Leveraging<\/strong> creative opposition tactics and an expansive research operation to put Republicans on the back foot in district and in the beltway;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Launching<\/strong> a modernized misinformation counterprogramming vertical to combat the lies from the right\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the 6 months since the DNC launched our FactPost account across platforms, the account has cultivated an 180% audience increase<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The People\u2019s Cabinet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Donald Trump fills his cabinet with out-of-touch billionaires, Fox News hosts, conspiracy theorists, and unqualified loyalists, the DNC launched the \u201cPeople\u2019s Cabinet\u201d to leverage a deep bench of qualified policy experts, national and local leaders, as well as community voices to cut through the lies and speak directly to the American people about the reality of the Trump administration\u2019s reckless and dangerous agenda.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>People\u2019s Cabinet members have leveraged their expertise on <a href=\"https:\/\/democrats.org\/news\/icymi-dnc-peoples-cabinet-press-call-on-gops-billionaire-first-budget-bill\/\">press briefings<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/democrats.org\/news\/watch-peoples-cabinet-member-ned-price-calls-on-hegseth-to-resign-after-putting-national-security-at-risk-again\/\">social media content<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theruralimpact.com\/podcasts\/the-rural-impact\/episodes\/2149048330\">podcasts<\/a>, and have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EJvZEmuM0VE\">combated misinformation<\/a> on the DNC\u2019s daily messaging show, the Daily Blueprint.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We\u2019ve made a lot of progress, but there\u2019s much more to do:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no entity in the Democratic ecosystem right now that plans beyond a four-year cycle \u2014 and that needs to change, and it needs to change with us. While I\u2019m proud of all the work we\u2019ve already accomplished in only six months, we have to think beyond 2025, beyond the 2026 midterms, and even beyond the 2028 presidential election.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A core tenet of my campaign for DNC Chair was Build to Win, Build to Expand, and Build to Last. We have to realign our thinking \u2014 and resources \u2014 if we want the Democratic Party to truly compete, expand our map, and build to win long-term power across the country. We can\u2019t tinker on the edges or focus on a handful of battleground states each election cycle. We need to build long-term infrastructure in this party.
