Earlier today<\/a>, Donald Trump\u2019s handpicked Supreme Court Justices again eroded Americans\u2019 personal freedoms by clearing the way for bands of masked immigration agents to profile individuals based on race, language, job, or location. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Supreme Court\u2019s decision to lift the ban on racially targeted immigration enforcement in Los Angeles is a dangerous step backward for constitutional rights and human dignity. By allowing agents to profile individuals based on race, language, job, or location, the Court has once again sided with cruelty and fear over justice for all. Justice Sotomayor is right to call out this abuse of power, which undermines the Fourth Amendment and turns Latinos into targets. Rather than bringing down costs and helping working families, Donald Trump and the Republican Party are laser-focused on manufacturing chaos, scapegoating Latinos, and waging war against the rights and dignity of all Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Supreme Court\u2019s decision to lift protections against racially targeted immigration enforcement in Los Angeles is a direct assault on civil liberties and the dignity of working people. In a powerful dissent<\/a>, Justice Sonia Sotomayor \u2014 joined by Justices Kagan and Jackson \u2014 warned that the ruling gives federal agents a green light to harass and detain people simply because they \u201clook a certain way\u201d or \u201cspeak a certain way.\u201d By stripping away constitutional safeguards, the Court is making low-wage Latino workers \u201cfair game to be seized at any time,\u201d even if they are U.S. citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sotomayor called out the decision as a \u201cgrave misuse\u201d of the Court\u2019s emergency powers. By shifting the burden of proof onto workers to carry documentation just to exist freely in public, the Court is creating what Sotomayor called \u201ca second-class citizenship status.\u201d This ruling isn\u2019t just legally indefensible \u2014 it\u2019s part of Donald Trump\u2019s broader agenda to turn fear and racial profiling into official policy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
