Every dollar he rips away from cancer research is a setback for patients, families, and the doctors and scientists on the frontlines of fighting this disease \u2014and puts the future of medical advancement at risk. Millions of Americans know the heartbreak of cancer, but instead of supporting patients and doctors, Trump is pulling the plug on lifesaving medical progress \u2014 it\u2019s just cruel.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key points from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/09\/14\/magazine\/cancer-research-grants-funds-trump.html\">New York Times<\/a> reporting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In a matter of months, <strong>the Trump administration has canceled hundreds of millions of dollars in cancer-related research grants and contracts<\/strong>, <strong>arguing that they were part of politically driven D.E.I. initiatives, <\/strong>and suspended or delayed payments for hundreds of millions more.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It has terminated hundreds of government employees <strong>who helped lead the country\u2019s cancer-research system and ensured that new discoveries reached clinicians, cancer patients and the American public<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To <strong>Republicans and Democrats<\/strong>, biomedical research \u2014 and cancer research, in particular \u2014 <strong>was sacrosanct.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now an extraordinarily successful scientific research system \u2014 one that took decades to build, <strong>has saved millions of lives and generated billions of dollars in profits for American companies and investors <\/strong>\u2014 <strong>is being dismantled before our eyes.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cIt\u2019s an absolutely <strong>unmitigated disaster<\/strong>,\u201d Lauer told me. \u201cIt will take decades to recover from this,<strong> if we ever do<\/strong>.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>America\u2019s investment in cancer research has rippled out far beyond cancer. <\/strong>Investigating the molecular biology of one disease can naturally lead to discoveries about other ones \u2014 a phenomenon that scientists call convergence.
