Today, the Social Security Administration announced<\/a> a 2.8% Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for 2026 \u2014 after initially delaying<\/a> the announcement because of Donald Trump\u2019s government shutdown. With inflation already at 3.0% and expected<\/a> to continue increasing through the end of this year and into next \u2014 thanks to Trump\u2019s reckless tariffs \u2014 seniors’ adjusted social security checks will fail to keep up with rising prices, leading more seniors to feel financially squeezed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response, DNC People\u2019s Cabinet Member and former Commissioner of the Social Security Administration Martin O’Malley released the following statement: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDonald Trump\u2019s disastrous economic policies have led to spiking inflation that\u2019s squeezing American households \u2014 especially seniors and people living with disabilities who rely on their Social Security checks to survive. Trump\u2019s economy is forcing seniors and people with disabilities to choose between paying for food or medicine or utilities. The COLA increase won\u2019t even come close to covering the rising costs seniors and people with disabilities face \u2014 and Trump\u2019s inflation is only predicted to get worse in coming months. Trump\u2019s failed economic policies and his administration\u2019s continued attacks on Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid have robbed seniors and people with disabilities of peace of mind. While they lose confidence in the benefits they worked their whole lives to earn, Trump is lining the pockets of his rich donors.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many forecasters \u2014 including Trump\u2019s own administration \u2014 expect inflation to continue rising to above 3% next year, and Trump\u2019s tariffs<\/a> are to blame<\/a>. Economists warn that the increased inflation<\/a> will outpace the COLA, further squeezing seniors\u2019 already limited budgets. Notably, CPI inflation is already higher than the 2026 COLA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To make matters worse, health care costs for seniors are also set to increase. Medicare Part B premiums \u2014 which are usually deducted from Social Security benefits \u2014 are expected to rise<\/a> nearly 12% next year and wipe out roughly 40% of the COLA, while Medicare Part D premiums are also expected to spike<\/a>, in part because of Trump\u2019s devastating funding cuts<\/a>. And premiums could get even higher because of Trump\u2019s pharmaceutical tariffs<\/a>.\u00a0

Let\u2019s not forget: After repeatedly vowing to keep Social Security \u201c100% safe,\u201d Trump hollowed out<\/a> Social Security by making it as hard as possible for millions of seniors to access their benefits as his billionaire-first budget kicks seniors off health care and closes nursing homes. Despite Trump\u2019s campaign promises, his administration officials have admitted that the Trump Accounts created by his budget are a \u201cbackdoor for privatizing Social Security<\/a>\u201d and that they would consider raising the retirement age<\/a>. Trump and his cronies cannot be trusted to protect America\u2019s seniors.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
